Guest akanalog Posted May 2, 2005 Report Posted May 2, 2005 on dimadozen someone is seeding some miles davis material labelled "unreleased sessions 1973-1976" with 2 CDs (volumes) of material. does anyone know what the deal is with this stuff? i downloaded it and it is very interesting to hear but how come i have never gotten word of this material before? i am pretty sure this isn't just high quality live snippets labelled as studio stuff because there are some compositions i haven't heard (i can remember there is one by sam morrison). overall, this set is interesting because you can hear the "pangea" "agartha" material in tamer more subdued studio form-or see how the music was trying to be packaged and i guess, subdued, from the live craziness, into shorter studio tracks. anyone else check this music out and have any views? it obviously doesn't have the energy of the live material and is sort of formless, but to me, this is some fascinating music. and the '76 material even shows miles reincorporating an electric piano player into the mix, though he is barely audible and i have never heard of him before. and on a side note-i recently ordered the shunzoh ohno album "something's coming" and for people who like post "on the corner" miles, this album might prove interesting as it has cedric lawson and reggie lucas on it, as well as roy haynes on drums and it was recorded in '73, i think. not a great album, but pretty good. i prefer ohno's album "bubbles", which also has roy haynes on it. jazzbo Posted May 2, 2005 Report Posted May 2, 2005 I believe I have this material under a different bootleg guise. Interesting. . . especially the last parts which sort of herald a change and a move towards a more songlike structure that would be picked up "after the retirement." Would be nice stuff to have in a box from Columbia. . . and it wouldn't surprise me to see one one day. Dollars to be made off Miles=Sony eventually getting around to it. Quote
Degiorgio Posted June 5, 2005 Report Posted June 5, 2005 I just came across this on Paul Tingen's MilesBeyond website: Seth Rothstein, VP of Columbia Legacy writes: "The Cellar Door boxed set is on schedule for release in September 2005. The liner notes will consist of essays by each of the players - Keith Jarrett, Gary Bartz, Jack DeJohnette, Airto Moreira, Michael Henderson, and John McLaughlin. Almost all have agreed to do this. And there will be an overview essay that I/Bob Belden have commissioned from [boxed set co-producer] Adam Holzman. Probably in 2006, our next Miles box would be an On The Corner & Beyond type concept, dealing with Miles' early '70s material, which so many people want to hear." I thought the Cellar Door box was to be the final one... looks like there may be another next year! Quote

nmorin Posted June 8, 2005 Report Posted June 8, 2005 If you click through the sessions on Pete Losin's awesome Miles Ahead website, it sure looks like there's a lot of studio material from the On the Corner dates through 1976. Six or seven discs? Man, would that be cool. Quote

yul Posted June 9, 2005 Report Posted June 9, 2005 THE COMPLETE ON THE CORNER SESSIONS would be a very nice Miles box number 9! With probably three cd’s, it could consist of at least these recordings: MARCH 9, 1972 Red China Blues (4:06) JUNE 1, 1972 On the Corner / New York Girl / Thinkin' One Thing and Doin' Another / Vote for Miles (20:00) JUNE 6, 1972 Black Satin (5:15) One and One (6:09) Helen Butte (16:48) Mr. Freedom X (6:40) JUNE 12, 1972 Jabali (11:27) Ife (21:34) SEPTEMBER 6, 1972 Rated X (6:51) NOVEMBER 29, 1972 Untitled Original B (17:03) Untitled Original B (9:01) Untitled (Michael’s Tune) (4:09) NOVEMBER 30, 1972 Agharta Prelude (take 14) (17:32) Agharta Prelude (take 15) (9:20) DECEMBER 1, 1972 Michael's Tune (take 4) (4:18) DECEMBER 8, 1972 Billy Preston (12:34) Billy Preston (take ?) (20:36) And, of course, Miles visited Columbia studios quite a few times in the following four years (1973-1976). According to Miles Ahead web site and Jan Lohmann’s Discography there are loads of unreleased tapes in the vaults. I’d be very happy if Sony should release all these recordings some year/decade/century. Quote

Though I'll admit I never bothered to download the music that akanalog is talking about, so maybe my uninformed assessment is wrong. Guy Edited June 9, 2005 by Guy Berger Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted June 9, 2005 Report Posted June 9, 2005 Hard to pin me down as to whether I'd rather have lots more unreleased studio material, or more unreleased live recordings. A number of folks here have be critical of the quality and/or volume of unreleased material that was included in the Jack Johnson box, for instance. But not me. Most of it turned out to be rather darn interesting (IMHO), and I'm really glad most of it came out. Assuming an 8th Columbia studio box comes out (or 8th & 9th boxes), each with several hours of unreleased studio material, I'm definitely interested. Quote
JSngry Posted June 9, 2005 Report Posted June 9, 2005 What I've heard of the unissued studio material from these years is pretty darn interesting, at least to my ears. Quote
jazzbo Posted June 9, 2005 Report Posted June 9, 2005 And to my ears too. And as the live material seems easier to get to hear in some ways, I'd dig box after box from Columbia. . . . Quote
7/4 Posted June 10, 2005 Report Posted June 10, 2005 (edited) I'd buy this. On the Corner box? Hell yeah! And the 73-76 sessions sounds very interesting too. Edited June 10, 2005 by 7/4 Quote
