kh1958 Posted March 4, 2013 Author Report Posted March 4, 2013 Guest Artist Recital: Jean-Michel Pilc, Jazz Piano - Room: Kenton Hall Building: College of Music Building When: 3-5-2013 @ 8:00 PM Now a US resident for more than a decade, French native Jean-Michel Pilc taught himself to play piano. After coming to New York, Pilc formed a trio with François Moutin (bass) and drummer Ari Hoenig. The trio became a popular fixture in Big Apple venues such as the Blue Note, Birdland, Knitting Factory, and Sweet Basil. In 2000 Pilc’s trio released a pair of acclaimed recordings, Jean-Michel Pilc Trio - Together - Live at Sweet Basil, NYC - Vol. 1 & 2 (ARecords). The trio then released Welcome Home in 2002 followed in 2003 by Cardinal Points, which features Jean-Michel's extended work, “Trio Sonata,” created through a grant from Chamber Music America's New Works: Creation and Presentation Program, funded by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation. In 2004, Pilc released a solo recording, Follow Me, then came full circle in 2005 with a live trio recording, Live at the Iridium, New York, introducing his new ensemble with Thomas Bramerie on bass and Mark Mondesir on drums. The trio released a follow-up, New Dreams, in 2007. Pilc’s last two albums were both released in 2011 on the Motema label Essential, a live solo piano recording, and Threedom, featuring his legendary trio with François Moutin & Ari Hoenig, which has re-formed in 2010 under the collective name Pilc Moutin Hoenig. When not performing solo or with his trio, Pilc teaches masterclasses and clinics. Free Admission. Quote

kh1958 Posted March 17, 2013 Author Report Posted March 17, 2013 Saturday, March 16: Evan Weiss Quartet with Davy Mooney, Scat Jazz, Fort Worth. Trumpeter Evan Weiss has a nice debut recording out on Greg Osby's Inner Circle Records, Math or Magic. Currently listening to guitarist Davy Mooney from the Smalls archive. The Evan Weiss / Davy Mooney group was rather good, it turns out, even though Scat Jazz is a poor venue. I could hardly hear the band during the first set, the crowd was so loud. Many of the noisy people left after the first set, so I was able to move closer to hear better; the band seemed to gell during the second set. This fellow Evan Weiss seems to be a pretty strong composer. At any rate, there are more dates in the next few days in the area for this temporary assemblage. Tonight (Sunday), at 7 at Sweetwater in Denton. Monday, at 10 at Amsterdam Bar in Dallas. Tuesday, at 8 at Dan's Silverleaf in Denton. Quote

slide_advantage_redoux Posted April 17, 2013 Report Posted April 17, 2013 My quintet is now playing on Thursday nights in Dallas at a place across the street from the State Fair grounds. The Meridian Room has terrific dishes. Part of our deal is that we get a free meal, and nothing I have eaten there has failed to ring the bell. Nice staff too. And now we are on Thursdays instead of Tuesdays, the crowds are much better knock on wood. As usual: Greg Waits - trombone Jim Sangrey - tenor sax Todd Parsnow - guitar (Todd tours with Roy Hargrove's RH Factor) Russ Allor - bass Garry Granger - drums Try and stop by if you are so inclined! Say hello and hang out. No cover. We play from 9-12 now. http://www.themeridianroom.com/ Quote

slide_advantage_redoux Posted June 13, 2013 Report Posted June 13, 2013 My quintet (aka the jazz refugees) is back at The Meridian Room / Dallas (where mr sangrey and friends held court last week). Of course, Jim shares the front line with me most of the time. (he's a busy guy doncha know) We'd like to be able to hit every Thursday, but pay gigs keep getting in the way. Damn! Next month it should steady up and we'll be there every week for the foreseeable future. We play from 9-12. Great food (and i mean GREAT...just ask Jim; he agrees), a wide selection of beers (micro brews, imports etc), and generally a good time to be had. The staff is nice (and Dana is cute) http://www.themeridianroom.com/ Give us a holler if you pop in! Quote
