medjuck
Wow, what a great thread. I'm really impressed that so many people didn 't just follow what I would think was received opinion. Eg. I would expect: Miles: KOB, Trane: ALS, Bill Evans: Sunday at the VV, Wes: The Incredible Jazz Guitar etc I must admit that most of these would have been my choices. Now I want to give a closer listen to some of these other cds. Though I don't really think I'm going to like any Wes Montgomery record more than The Incredible Jazz Guitar Of... Guest akanalog
it would be nice if people began debating their choices. for instance-clifford thornton...you like soft machine's "five" over "six"? i think "six" is a much more enjoyable album. maybe you don't like karl jenkins, which i would understand. but even though "six" is live/studio i think it flows together nicely. BruceH
Some people are all but impossible reduce to one album. How do you approach Ellington, for instance? Choose one of the better suite albums, Such Sweet Thunder etc, or one of his album-as-album efforts such as Blues In Orbit, or simply go for one of the better compilations of his pre-album singles. I took the latter course, but I don't feel great about it.

clifford_thornton
Yeah, there is a double LP version of that. Strange... they press that reissue up brand spanking new, but don't have enough to keep some older titles in print! You know, I hadn't pulled out that Cherry/Penderecki LP in quite a long time, and I'm starting to think that "Humus" is my favorite Cherry, eclipsing the neck-and-neck runners-up "Symphony for Improvisers" and "Relativity Suite." Also decided recently that the BYGs (French and Japanese) aren't so great... Dollar Brand - Anatomy of a South African Village Alan Skidmore - TCB Eh, maybe Tubby Hayes - Mexican Green is my fave Tubbs, I don't know. It's so hard to choose just one, isn't it?
