Guest akanalog Posted May 20, 2005 Report Posted May 20, 2005 i just picked up a cheap CD on giants of jazz labeled "poem for malcom". it is pretty cool actually-some good philly joe jones on it and some grachan moncur and some hank mobley. it seems like it might have been licensced from byg actual but i dunno... anyway was this a good or a bad purchase? is this music available in a more legit or complete form? this CD is only two longish tracks. JSngry Posted May 20, 2005 Report Posted May 20, 2005 A rip (EVERYTHING on that label is a rip) from BYG/Actuel. But since they weren't exactly "clean" themselves, I don't know that there is a morally "kegit" release... Quote
MartyJazz Posted May 21, 2005 Report Posted May 21, 2005 Well, as you've probably discovered, it's pretty short for a CD. In fact, it's very short as far as LPs go, a copy of which I've owned for many years. It has two tracks "MamaRose/Poem for Malcolm" (13:30) on side 1; "Rain Forest/Oleo" (19:50) on side 2. Nevertheless I find all the Shepp albums on BYG/Actuel from this period fascinating and very musical documents. You think Mosaic would ever think of giving its imprimatur and beautiful treatment to the best of '60s avant garde?......Nah. Quote

One of the problems regarding the Byg/Actuel output is that nobody seems to know where the original tapes are. Two of the partners in the venture do not know where they are and the third one does not give a damn anymore! Quote
GregK Posted May 21, 2005 Report Posted May 21, 2005 I have it on a limitited edition Actuel, in one of those mini-LP sleeves. I agree, it is very good Quote
Guest akanalog Posted May 21, 2005 Report Posted May 21, 2005 theres nothing out BYG actual-wise where i could have gotten this in a twofer? i guess i am curious about that. i always passed on d. cherry's "orient" and "blue lake" but then i saw them together as a two-fer on BYG and had to do it, for instance. because isn't there a sort of sister shepp session called "yasmina" or something? i remember hearing it once and not loving it but my ears are open wider now. clifford_thornton Posted May 21, 2005 Report Posted May 21, 2005 Yes, there was a Charly twofer that combined Yasmina and Poem for Malcolm - I believe it's from the early '90s. Probably could find it used pretty easily... Yasmina is an amazing record, both the orchestra and the small group with Mobley (doing a tear-up of Moncur's "Sonny's Back"). Quote
brownie Posted May 21, 2005 Report Posted May 21, 2005 Actually (pun intended!) there was an Archie Shepp twofer vinyl. That was Double Actuel 203 and had 'Yasmina, a Black Woman' and 'Live at the Panafrican Festival'! There were a couple of other Double LP from the Actuel series (including a Sun Ra) in the early '70s. Quote

I thought those came out later once the originals were OOP. In fact, don't they have yellow-and-orange labels? Edited May 22, 2005 by clifford_thornton Quote
