Hopefully this will give Tolliver's work the exposure he deserves.

In any case, I'd prefer complete sessions over an anthology covering all sessions, but only in excerpts.

Sorry for the typo;

What I wanted to say: as the material Tolliver has released over the years is much more than three CDs (the usual size of a select box, I'm afraid they might give us a bit of everything, but nothing in complete form. We'll see as soon as details are revealed.

mike you are really missing the boat here. This is the complete live Music inc band so that's it. He released more of course: a big band Music inc and quartet things but this is withing the scope MC took "complete".

I've got "Slugs" (vinyl & CD) and "Tokyo" (CD), so it will be interesting to see what additional material is included. I'd hate to buy all this stuff again, but we'll see what the final box looks like.

Me too.

Will probably depend on how much of a "completist" one wants to be.

I think it is wise they do it this way. I mean, how many people are there in the world who are willing to plunk down on 7 or 8 CDs of Charles Tolliver at once? I personally have none of this music, and look forward to getting this affordable option. But if my option were to get The Complete Charles Tolliver on Strata East, and I didn't know his music at all prior to that?

that's extremely well put Adam... I competely agree.. I too have made "chance" box set purchases on Mosaic (sometimes with no previous knowledge about the artist) and I've often felt that it's a crapshoot.... 50/50.... Sometimes it's born great results... (Bud Shank), sometimes disaster (Dinah Washington)... The great/difficult thing about the Tolliver (and many other lesser-known Mosaic releases) is that much if not all of thier stuff is either not in print or extremely hard to get... (Therefore it's difficult to get the know the artist before you plunk down the $$$...)

So I'm completely with you on the Select for Tolliver....

:tup:tup Well said....

Hard to judge until we get the official listing, but I think I have half the material in here, since I grabbed some recent Tolliver Strata East re-issues that showed up at Dusty Groove. That makes it hard to justify buying a Select (for me), but the missing pieces may be particularly rare.

I've picked up a couple of the Tolliver Strata East CDs used from a fellow board member--I'll be all over this Select the day that it comes out. Wow, between this and the Hill set in the spring... it's been a very good year!

Those Strata Easts were sloshing around the system for a long time here in the UK - easy to find and cheap. Is there really so much stored demand for them? I think some of the titles exist as cheap Charly releases also, though I'm not sure 100% which is which.
