Ron S Posted August 25, 2005 Report Posted August 25, 2005 I thought Humming to Myself was the new Keith Jarrett album... ← No, that's "Moanin' to Myself." Quote
Big Wheel Posted August 25, 2005 Report Posted August 25, 2005 and using the same mehtodology, these are the top 10 sellers from prestige, on amazon..Miles might be disappointed to know he's still making a lot of money for 'the man'. 1. Cookin' With the Miles Davis Quintet (20 Bit Mastering) [ORIGINAL RECORDING REMASTERED] (Audio CD) ~ Miles Davis Quintet, Miles Davis 2. Saxophone Colossus (20 Bit Mastering) [ORIGINAL RECORDING REMASTERED] (Audio CD) ~ Sonny Rollins 3. Workin With the Miles Davis Quintet (20 Bit Mastering) [ORIGINAL RECORDING REMASTERED] (Audio CD) ~ Miles Davis 4. The Complete Prestige/Bluesville Recordings [bOX SET] [LIVE] (Audio CD) ~ Lightnin' Hopkins Original Release Date: October 17, 1991 ← Try doing a search for "OJC" instead and see which Prestige titles come up on top. I think searching for "Prestige" may only bring up non-OJC series titles, like the 20 bit K2 remasterings... Quote
montg Posted August 25, 2005 Report Posted August 25, 2005 Here's the search results with ojc. the methodology's far from perfect since some Prestiges are not labled (on amazon) as ojc and of couse many ojcs are not prestige. The Lucky Thompson is probably an anomaly since he's been in the news lately. Interesting to see that Bill Evans is still bringing in a bunch of dough for 'the man'. 1. Thelonious Monk with John Coltrane (Audio CD) ~ John Coltrane, Thelonious Monk 2. Saxophone Colossus (Audio CD) ~ Sonny Rollins 3. Moon Beams (Audio CD) ~ Bill Evans 4. Incredible Jazz Guitar (Audio CD) ~ Wes Montgomery 5. Relaxin' with the Miles Davis Quintet (Audio CD) ~ Miles Davis Quintet 6. Lucky Strikes (Audio CD) ~ Lucky Thompson 7. Explorations (Audio CD) ~ Bill Evans 8. Everybody Digs Bill Evans (Audio CD) ~ Bill Evans 9. Lush Life (Audio CD) ~ John Coltrane 10. Art Pepper Meets The Rhythm Section (Audio CD) ~ Art Pepper Quote
J.A.W. Posted August 25, 2005 Report Posted August 25, 2005 Only 4 of those are Prestige. ← You beat me to it. Quote
montg Posted August 25, 2005 Report Posted August 25, 2005 That's why I just searched for prestige rather than ojc the first time around. In know it's not perfect, just a gauge of what sells particularly well, at the moment. I guess everybody digs Bill Evans (but me). Related point, the Bird/Diz town hall concert is still ranked in the stratosphere on amazon, (#167). Quote
alankin Posted September 2, 2005 Report Posted September 2, 2005 The only Strata East record to have significant sales was Gil Scott-Heron's Winter In America. It was huge by jazz standards and almost brought the label down. ← Splain me that one, Chuck, if you don't mind -- thanks!! ← The only thing that's worse for a business than failure is a big success. clifford_thornton Posted September 2, 2005 Report Posted September 2, 2005 In a way, that's true - ESP might have fared better if they hadn't gained notoriety from the Fugs and Pearls Before Swine, with bootlegs and constant difficulty meeting demand at the time. Of course, some of that was due to mismanagement. I wonder what the biggest-selling BYG record was? I'm guessing the Don Cherrys or Blase, but not sure about that. Quote
