Hardbopjazz Posted September 23, 2005 Report Posted September 23, 2005 The only ones that come to the top of my head are Max Roach and Hank Jones. Are there any others? Quote
BruceH Posted September 23, 2005 Report Posted September 23, 2005 (edited) Roy Haynes ← Yeah. Now that Lucky Thompson has passed away, he's the only one who comes readily to mind. (Aside from Max Roach and Hank Jones that is.) Edited September 23, 2005 by BruceH Quote
sidewinder Posted September 23, 2005 Report Posted September 23, 2005 Jay McShann ← You took the words from me! Of course, his ex band-leader. The Ageless One ! Quote
Robert J Posted September 23, 2005 Report Posted September 23, 2005 Oscar Peterson - from Norman Granz' Jam Session Herb Pomeroy Quote
Hardbopjazz Posted September 23, 2005 Author Report Posted September 23, 2005 I forgot Jay McShann and Peterson. Quote
BruceH Posted September 23, 2005 Report Posted September 23, 2005 I knew that some names would come up that I'd totally overlooked. Isn't it awesome that McShann is still alive? Quote
sidewinder Posted September 23, 2005 Report Posted September 23, 2005 I remember being totally amazed that he was still musically active when I saw him in Toronto but that was 15 years ago.. Quote

As recent as April of this year. Not bad for an 89 year old! Quote

That's good to hear. It was at the Cafe des Copains where I saw him in solo recital (now the Montreal Bistro, I think). Great show. Around the same time I also saw Sir Charles Thompson (another one for the Bird list, I think). Stony Plain - that's a great little label out of Edmonton, Alberta Edited September 23, 2005 by sidewinder Quote
BruceH Posted September 23, 2005 Report Posted September 23, 2005 Sir Charles Thompson is still around? That's great, too. I always liked his work. Quote
jazzbo Posted September 23, 2005 Report Posted September 23, 2005 Sadki Hakim is still about isn't he? Quote
sidewinder Posted September 23, 2005 Report Posted September 23, 2005 Sadki Hakim is still about isn't he? ← Didn't he pass away in the early 1980s? Quote
AllenLowe Posted September 23, 2005 Report Posted September 23, 2005 anybody seen or hear from Duke Jordan? another living musician who worked with Bird is Bill Triglia, pianist - Bill's got some great stories, including the time that Bird showed up at an Orthodox Jewish wedding Bill was playing, and played for an old Jewish guy who was dancing on a table - Quote

brownie Posted September 23, 2005 Report Posted September 23, 2005 Tony Scott and Paul Bley are still very much alive! They both played with Bird on several occasions. Oops, Allen Lowe came up faster with Bley! Quote
Hardbopjazz Posted September 23, 2005 Author Report Posted September 23, 2005 (edited) The Freeman brothers. ← Yes, I even have a real poor sounding Parker album with both of them on it. I totally forgot about that record. Edited September 23, 2005 by Hardbopjazz Quote
brownie Posted September 23, 2005 Report Posted September 23, 2005 Billy Taylor also played with Charlie Parker several times. Quote
