Trane's "Impressions"

From the Vanguard set. On disc 1 you can hear Trane call the tune as "So What", although at this juncture the melody is clearly "Impressions". I read somewhere in another thread here that he based the riff on a early 40's classical recording(?) But according to David Wild's liner notes Trane had called "Impressions" "So What", even when the tune became further from the Davis classic. So what's the deal? thanks in advance.

FWIW, I don't think the Vanguard "Impressions" was released until '63 (on the album of the same name), and that was the first version of the tune to appear on record. So I imagine the name changed sometime between the Vanguard engagement and the release of the album.

The Gould piece has several themes. Let's call them A, B, C.

C is the "Impressions" theme.

On the Larry Young performance, the tenor plays the A melody from Pavanne, finishing up at about 1:00. It returns about 12:40.

Honestly, it's a waste of royalties. Could have called that a group free improvisation and said that Morgan was just quoting the Gould piece! I wonder if any of the other musicians were aware of its presence.
