Shawn Posted November 18, 2005 Report Posted November 18, 2005 Just picked this up today...what a nice way to unwind after a long SHITTY day at work! First part of the disc is all rough and ready bawdy R&B numbers (including the "classic" Mountain Oysters)...second half is very tasty mid-tempo & ballad numbers with either Bill Dogget or Billy Taylor on organ. Fine stuff indeed if you're needin' a Lockjaw fix. Quote
Shawn Posted November 19, 2005 Author Report Posted November 19, 2005 hmmmm...the Lockjaw fans seem to have dried up and blown away.... Quote
JSngry Posted November 19, 2005 Report Posted November 19, 2005 Nah, just been away from the computer digging Jaws. Quote
Dan Gould Posted November 19, 2005 Report Posted November 19, 2005 What label is this CD on? Courtesy of a certain board member, I just got me two CDs worth of primo Lockjaw at Kimball's in the early 80s, accompanied by Buddy Montgomery. Can't wait to spin that this weekend. Quote
Swinging Swede Posted November 19, 2005 Report Posted November 19, 2005 The resurrected Classics label. I will get this one day (have the first volume). They look a bit different now. No "chronogical" among other things! Quote
brownie Posted November 19, 2005 Report Posted November 19, 2005 Did not have to wait for that Classics reissue to groove on Lockjaw! There are numerous albums under his name on Prestige which turn me on at each listen. The Cookbooks sessions cook! And those solos he took when he was with the Count Basie band are still old favorites! Quote
Tom 1960 Posted November 19, 2005 Report Posted November 19, 2005 (edited) Hi Shawn. Not sure if you own this already, but I just received in the past week from yourmusic.com 'Tough Tenors' with Johnny Griffin. It's a good one my friend and at $5.99 you can't go wrong. montg Posted November 19, 2005 Report Posted November 19, 2005 I love Lockjaw; his cookbook music with SHirley Scott may be my favorite within that genre. And I love his work with the early 50s Basie band. Lockjaw, with Basie on organ, shows the way forward. Quote
Alexander Hawkins Posted November 19, 2005 Report Posted November 19, 2005 Flight of the Foo Birds. And then the rest! Quote
