There has been some prior discussion of Swedish pianist Jan Johansson right here on the Big O. He was a startlingly good player with a fresh and original approach to the instrument. His untimely death in a car accident at the age of 33, was a genuine loss to the music. Those who have been around these parts for awhile will remember Vic Christensen. He's the guy who turned me on to Johansson a number of years ago. But, I digress. For those who have not had the pleasure of hearing him, or for those who have, might I recommend a release that's available on eMusic called simply, Blues. This one easily earns the coveted DJ seal of approval.

Up over and out.

also - Arto Lindsay's Righteous Babe label albums are available.

I saw that. How are those albums?

It depends on how you like Arto. None of this is all that skronky (but all beautifully produced and almost back-groundy at times) and save for 'Salt', the best of the three, they don't quite compare to the brazilly releases previously on Gramavision/BarNone (?) imo. I've always loved that Ambitious Lovers - "Greed" album a lot and sure wished he'd get into some genre busting work like that again.

if I had to pull a baker's dozen I'd hit these:

PRIZE:

pode ficar

o nome dela

tone

interior life

INVOKE:

uma

clemency

beija me

SALT:

habite em mim

personagem

twins

jardim de alma

de lama lamina

combustive!

edit: to add the first track from this I just saw

Stolen from Strangers ??

alviverde

Check out the Enja titles that just appeared. Great stuff.

Some good UK labels too (over here at least).

Zephyr which does a fine line in mainstream jazz - Alan Barnes, Brian Lemon, Tony Coe etc. And Spotlite which has a mixture of UK stuff and a host of bebop material (I have the Parker Dials via Spotlite).

Three very good Norma Winstone's too on a label called Enodoc including this one (which I'm listening to at the moment):

If you are not allergic to seventies singer songwriters, I highly recommend Circles in the Stream by Bruce Cockburn. The vibes enhanced version of Joy WIll Find a Way is one of my all time top ten tracks.

Rabih Abou-Khalil and Abdullah Ibrahim have dropped in quantity from Enja. Eight days to the likely Black Saint/Soul Note bounty.

Six Winter + Winter albums appeared today - Uri Caine to Fred Frith.

The ECM strategy continues to mystify - some more appeared a few days back, even though they took most of their first batch off. And a large number of Carla Bley/Steve Swallow discs have shown up.

ECM or Winter + Winter have yet to hit the states. I read on the emusic forums that a lot of ECM just landed for users in the UK. It adds to the speculation of what the "Mother Load of Jazz" will be next week on emusic here in the states. My guess is Black Saint because of the Cam Jazz connection but it could very well be ECM.

For those interested, for today only (Saturday), Amazon mp3 has this Louis Armstrong date for only $0.99:

New Orleans Nights

Also "Willy And The Poor Boys" by Creedence Clearwater Revival for $1.99.

I've been keeping a close eye on the "Today's Top MP3 Albums, Most $8.99 and Under" category on a daily basis. You have to look for albums that look out of place on a typical "Top 10" list - those are the bargain items.
