randyhersom Posted June 10, 2008 Report Posted June 10, 2008 Yes, that John Patton - Soul Connection just appeared, and I'll get it this afternoon. I had just been reading a good thread about that album. Quote
RDK Posted June 10, 2008 Report Posted June 10, 2008 Yep, already grabbed the Patton this morning. Quote
Van Basten II Posted June 10, 2008 Report Posted June 10, 2008 (edited) I spotted Archie Shepp with Horace Parlan in one list there. A ridiculous pairing? Not in the least. I saw them together on TV, recorded in Montréal I think. It was a fantastic performance. Back in the 60s, some of those "avant garde" guys seemed a little intimidating, but many years have passed since then ............ The music is great, but the fidelity of this album is lacking. Really great headphone, get lost in the vibe, music, then some distortion pulls you right back out. I actually attended this gig, maybe i appear in the crowd shots who knows, they mostly played blues, a very fine evening although to see come on stage you had to be worry if they were going to make it through. ejp626 Posted June 20, 2008 Report Posted June 20, 2008 Yes, that John Patton - Soul Connection just appeared, and I'll get it this afternoon. I had just been reading a good thread about that album. Kind of wish I had noticed that, but I got the CD in near mint condition for a good price, and it is a nice one. To make up for that, I held off from getting Ghost Rock by Nomo when I was in Dusty Groove, and it showed up right away on eMusic (yea!), so I downloaded that as well as two others that were available (Better Than That and New Tones). I also grabbed Barney Kessel - Some Like It Hot Eric Kloss - About Time Eric Kloss - First Class Ojos de Brujo - Bari Astor Piazzolla - Pulsacion And then it was all over, like a kid spending his allowance all in one day. There are a few others that are really calling to me, so I may try this Circuit City booster card deal. I think I'll be near one Tuesday evening. Quote
ejp626 Posted June 20, 2008 Report Posted June 20, 2008 (edited) I may have raised this before, but is there any way to contact eMusic about CDs that they probably ought to have (based on their having most of the other new releases from a label for instance) but don't? They seem particularly spotty on Delmark, though have been adding some new ones recently. I'm more interested in High Note, where they seem to have most of the releases except for one or two I'd really like (David Newman's Life esp.). Obviously the label may just have decided not to release that album to eMusic, but it could also just be an oversight that could easily be corrected with the next set of releases to eMusic (if someone let them know, that is -- so I suppose the other direction would be to contact High Note, but that seems an even longer shot to me). Anyway, the contact them page is so specific and mostly about technical problems or canceling one's account. They claim not to monitor their Message Boards, so I don't think that is a feasible option either. Any ideas would be helpful. Thanks. Eric Actually I changed my mind. I think it is probably easier to just contact the label and ask them to release Life to eMusic when they have any other new releases. But I am still wondering if there is a way to ask eMusic about such issues. By the way, in addition to the RVG sampler that is still there, eMusic is offering 25 free songs from artists appearing at Pitchfork (at least a few people will be interested in some of the bands -- and for free you can dl the whole thing and delete any you don't like): Pitchfork. Apparently the offer is only for US and perhaps Canadian members, which has gotten a bunch of people worked up. Edited June 20, 2008 by ejp626 Quote
captainwrong Posted June 20, 2008 Report Posted June 20, 2008 Contacting the label is the correct thing to do. If you email eMusic, that's what they're going to tell you anyway. From what I understand, it's a little different than a physical record store. They can't just call up Delmark and order the missing titles (though I too wish they could.) Delmark has to send the tracks over. So, giving them a nudge is going to be the only way that'll happen. If you've never been to the message boards, they'll tell you the same over there. And people always get worked up over anything region specific, especially free stuff. Right now, I can point to a dozen or more releases that are UK only that I'd download in a minute, but I understand that's the way it goes sometimes. A lot of eMusic subscribers don't get that. (You should have seen some of the hellfire people outside the US were spitting during the brief time eMusic had the Rolling Stones ABKCO catalog.) Quote

(You should have seen some of the hellfire people outside the US were spitting during the brief time eMusic had the Rolling Stones ABKCO catalog.) Yeah, I dropped HighNote a line. I'll report back if this results in some more music getting uploaded onto eMusic. Personally I think all this region 1, region 2 stuff is ridiculous, particularly since it does so little to actually curb "bad behavior." But yes, people do begin to feel that what is up on the web should be available to them and really get enraged when they can't have it. I guess I'd cut the eMusic subscribers some slack as they are at least trying to obtain music legally. I think when you spend a little time surfing the blogs and searching through torrents, the entitlement attitude is a bit out of control -- and it is at least a little contagious. (I know we've gone over this hundreds of times, but it really does seem that no one under 18 is going to pay for music ever again.) Quote

Hoppy T. Frog Posted June 23, 2008 Report Posted June 23, 2008 I think the "regionalism" of certain titles or artists more has to do what or what kind of record contracts someone has. In the days before mass globalization, you could be on a different record label in every country. Until the 90s, U2 were on CBS in Ireland and Island Records everywhere else. Or the Sex Pistols on Virgin UK, and Warner Bros in the US. Quote

Holy cats! I've yet to be disappointed with any of their stuff I've picked up. I've also noticed Storyville is still bringing more stuff. Maybe time to raid the Circuit City again and hope they still have the $5 booster cards. Edited June 25, 2008 by Captain Wrong Quote
.:.impossible Posted June 25, 2008 Report Posted June 25, 2008 After seeing Billy Hart Quartet on some best of year lists I grabbed it and have enjoyed it. Dennis Gonzalez' name drew me in to Alvin Fielder Trio - A Measure of Vision and it was worth it. Lyrical and evocative. Rudresh Mahanthappa - Codebook impressed on first listen, a quartet with Vijay Iyer. They continue to add items on the Ayler Records label and William Parker - And William Danced and Exploding Customer Live at the Glenn Miller Cafe are both excellent. That Fielder Trio album misses for me. I'll give it another go. I really enjoyed Alvin Fielder live. Quote

Dave James Posted June 26, 2008 Report Posted June 26, 2008 I have the 90 downloads a month package, so I like to take some chances. Sometimes they work out, sometimes, they don't. One that did is by trumpeter Anders Bergcrantz called About Time. Up over and out. Quote
jazzbo Posted June 26, 2008 Report Posted June 26, 2008 I have that same package, 90. I have been selecting albums featuring Ellington, Monk or Mingus in the titles (by others). Mostly pays off in dividends. Quote
