ghost of miles Posted February 20, 2006 Report Posted February 20, 2006 Just got in a new release from Mary Records (run by Peter F. O'Brien), with Geri Allen on piano, Buster Williams on bass, and either Billy Hart or Andrew Cyrille on drums running through Mary Lou's ZODIAC SUITE and several other pieces. I like their take on "Aries" so far... love the original suite so much that I'll be interested to see what the new folks bring to it. Quote

This band is playing in NYC while I'm in town the first week of May; not sure if I'll see them or not. Mark~ Quote
ghost of miles Posted February 20, 2006 Author Report Posted February 20, 2006 I like the new CD--almost all the way through it. Allen is a good pick, I think, to put a modern gloss on this music (not that it needs much; the original still sounds very modern to me). Hope you get to catch them live! Quote
ghost of miles Posted February 20, 2006 Author Report Posted February 20, 2006 BTW, this question may have been raised before--have any of Mary Lou's radio programs from the mid-1940s survived? I'd love to hear those... Quote
Lazaro Vega Posted February 21, 2006 Report Posted February 21, 2006 (edited) You think Mary Lou was thinking of Ellington and Mingus when she wrote "Taurus"? Heh. Edited February 21, 2006 by Lazaro Vega Quote
jazzbo Posted February 21, 2006 Report Posted February 21, 2006 Probably Ellington yes, Mingus no. . . . Quote

JSngry Posted February 28, 2006 Report Posted February 28, 2006 Had a few listens to this last night, and it's going to be filed under "Good For The Long Haul". A superb album in every respect. Quote

A superb album in every respect. Agreed! I've had a chance to listen all the way through twice now... played a couple cuts when I sat in on the afternoon show yesterday, and am going to play it again on the new Friday-night show that I'm hosting. Looks like much of it was recorded several years ago... glad it finally came out. In general I like the tracks with Hart more (which make up most of the album), but the material with Cyrille at the end of the disc is very enjoyable too. Glad they took on Herbie's "Bebop Waltz."
