Ken Dryden Posted April 19, 2006 Report Posted April 19, 2006 Just got an e-mail from True Blue that seems to indicate the Wes Montgomery Riverside and Art Tatum Pablo solo boxes will soon be deleted "by the manufacturer." It would seem that True Blue is just dropping them, I doubt that they are such slow sellers that Concord/Fantasy would drop them all together. Quote
ghost of miles Posted April 19, 2006 Author Report Posted April 19, 2006 Ken, I would hope & think that to be the case; the language, however, sounded to me as if these sets are on the way to being deleted by Concord/Fantasy. Here's the opening part of the e-mail: TRUE BLUE MUSIC DISCONTINUED CDs & LPs http://www.truebluemusic.com/products.asp?dept=17 The following titles will be deleted as soon as the manufacturers have exhausted their inventory. From now through April 27, 2006, we are offering many of these items on sale to help our customers acquire the selections they desire before it is too late. CDs RUNNING LOW Art Tatum - The Complete Pablo Solo Masterpieces ($99.98; Sale price $79.98) http://www.truebluemusic.com/prodinfo.asp?number=TATUA07 These 125 performances on 7 CDs, recorded between `53 and `56, are a monument to Tatum's pianistic genius. All of the material is sequenced chronologically as Tatum played it, giving us insight into his thought processes, choice of material and pacing. Wes Montgomery - The Complete Riverside Recordings ($179.98; Sale price $149.98) http://www.truebluemusic.com/prodinfo.asp?number=MONTW05 All 158 performances (12 CDs) that this guitar master recorded for Riverside, home of his greatest work. 16 tracks are released here for the first time. In addition to his regular albums with organist Mel Rhyne or pianists Wynton Kelly, Tommy Flanagan and Hank Jones, there are classic encounters with Cannonball Adderley, Milt Jackson and George Shearing. Duke Ellington - The Complete Brunswick/Vocalion Recordings 1926-31 ($39.98; Sale price $34.98) http://www.truebluemusic.com/prodinfo.asp?number=ELLID01 Sixty-seven tracks in all on 3 CDs, from "East St. Louis Toodle-o" and "Black And Tan Fantasy" to the Jungle Band to "Rockin' In Rhythm" and "Creole Rhapsody." With Bubber Miley, Tricky Sam Nanton, Sonny Greer, Cootie Williams, Johnny Hodges and others. Louis Armstrong - The California Concerts ($49.98; Sale price $43.98) http://www.truebluemusic.com/prodinfo.asp?number=ARMSL05 This 4-disc set covers the complete live performances of the All-Stars at the L.A. Civic Auditorium in `53 with Barney Bigard, Jack Teagarden and Earl Hines, and at the Crescendo Club in `55 with Bigard, Trummy Young and Billy Kyle. Includes previously unreleased material. Further on down the Jimmy Rushing FIVE FEET OF SOUL cd is listed, and that's one that Blue Note has announced it's deleting. I suppose a quick call to Mosaic could clear up any confusion... I already have both the Wes and Tatum boxes, and I think just about all of that material is available as single CDs. Wanted to give a heads-up, though, to any folks who might want the boxes. I thought that Ellington set had gone OOP awhile ago. Maybe it's just been on the warning list for a long time. Quote
Ken Dryden Posted April 19, 2006 Report Posted April 19, 2006 If that's the case, maybe they have to make room for pallets of CDs by some of the ridiculous artists signed to the label in recent years. Quote
Brad Posted April 19, 2006 Report Posted April 19, 2006 The Jimmy Rushing is a very nice CD. I'd advise you to pick it up while you can. Quote
ghost of miles Posted April 19, 2006 Author Report Posted April 19, 2006 The Jimmy Rushing is a very nice CD. I'd advise you to pick it up while you can. Just got it through BMG... they have it for $1.99 in the clearance section. Even with shipping, it comes to less than five bucks. Quote
tranemonk Posted April 19, 2006 Report Posted April 19, 2006 (edited) as tempting as this is... I can't justify 11cds of Wes..... How much of the Verve stuff is still in print? Edited April 19, 2006 by tranemonk Quote

Shawn Posted April 23, 2006 Report Posted April 23, 2006 The Wes Montgomery box is AMAZING and not to be missed (IMO). I believe everything in the box is also available as single CD releases, but at a much higher cost overall. Also includes albums by other leaders that Wes appeared on (Work Song, West Coast Blues, etc...). Quote

sidewinder Posted April 24, 2006 Report Posted April 24, 2006 what would the price be? About 25 euro (haven't checked in the last few days to see if it is still listed). Quote
garthsj Posted May 3, 2006 Report Posted May 3, 2006 Using my very rudimentary German, the "Babelfish" translation site, and some instinctual probes, I have managed to order seven box sets from our German friends in recent months (thanks to those on this list who alerted me to these bargains). I believe that I paid less than $60 for the Wes Montgomery set, as well as the Prestige Monk box ... and just last week my order for the Tatum Group set, the Debut Story, and the 10-CD Oscar Peterson Pablo set arrived ... Even with the high postage, the prices are about one-third those in the U.S. Now if I can only find the time to listen to all of this music. Quote
neveronfriday Posted May 3, 2006 Report Posted May 3, 2006 (edited) The Wes Montgomery box is one of the best boxes I ever bought. Heard it a trillion times + 1. Everyone should have one. Edited May 3, 2006 by neveronfriday Quote
