Durium Posted June 24, 2006 Report Posted June 24, 2006 (edited) Fourty years ago Donald Byrd recorded six tracks for his Blue Note album Mustang. It's a style of music I love to hear. Keep swinging Durium Edited June 24, 2006 by Durium Quote
sidewinder Posted June 24, 2006 Report Posted June 24, 2006 (edited) Indeed, this is a fine album with some really catchy tunes. One can hear the strong backbeat influence of Motown on this one - not suprising I guess when one of their house drummers, Freddie Waits, is on drums. Edited June 24, 2006 by sidewinder Quote

sheldonm Posted June 24, 2006 Report Posted June 24, 2006 I went to see/meet/photograph Donald Byrd a couple years ago in Detroit. I asked him to sign my copy of Mustang and he wrote "For Freddie Redd, Donald Byrd" on it. When I asked him what it meant, he said that he used to joke with Freddie that one day he (Donald) would have a shiny, red Mustang! m! Quote
jlhoots Posted June 24, 2006 Report Posted June 24, 2006 Really good album, but then you already knew that. Quote
Cali Posted June 24, 2006 Report Posted June 24, 2006 Good album. I usually play it with BLACKJACK, back to back. Companion pieces IMO. Quote

Just curious, did you mean Freddie Redd or Sonny Redd, the composer of "Mustang"? Quote

Just curious, did you mean Freddie Redd or Sonny Redd, the composer of "Mustang"? just as curious as in the linernotes Sonny Red Kyner explains the title of his tune: "When my roality check comes in, I'm gonna buy a Mustang!" Or something to that effect. Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted June 24, 2006 Report Posted June 24, 2006 Good album. I usually play it with BLACKJACK, back to back. Companion pieces IMO. Yup, those two, plus "Slow drag", form a trilogy which I think is Byrd's peak. I've always loved the sleeve of "Mustang". The model seems to suggest both someone riding a Mustang horse, and the lines of a fast car. Reid Miles all the way; photo and design. Brilliant. MG Quote

Shawn Posted June 26, 2006 Report Posted June 26, 2006 Remember, that same model was used on another album...even wearing the same outfit... Quote
Shawn Posted June 26, 2006 Report Posted June 26, 2006 as for the album....easily one of my favorite Blue Note's...there's such an incredible vibe. I also tend to listen to Slow Drag, Blackjack & The Creeper right afterwards. Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted June 26, 2006 Report Posted June 26, 2006 Remember, that same model was used on another album...even wearing the same outfit... Egad! And consecutive numbers, too! And I never noticed. Looking closely now, I think between 4238 and 4239 she'd had a hairdo and shortened the dress (also removed her trousers). MG Quote
