medjuck Posted July 19, 2006 Report Posted July 19, 2006 The iTunes Music Store has added 2 Coltrane items: Live in Paris, and Live at the Half-Note. Apparently the first one is taken from a Charley release of '61, '63 and '65 concerts. The 2nd was was actualy recorded at both Birdland and the Half Note. They're 5 cuts and 4 cuts respectively and only $3.99 each (!) so I'll probably get them but does anyone know anything about them? They've also added a Miles Davis release called Miles Tones that contains lives recordings from the 50's. I would preseume that all of thtese are bootlegs so I'm surprised to find them on the iTunes store. Quote

As far as the Coltrane Half Note release, which I own on CD -- the tracks "Brazilia" and "Song of Praise" are both the same performance, only one of them has the first 30 seconds or so clipped off. This is a spectacular performance, but available on the recent Verve/Impulse release (presumably with better sound). Guy Quote
John L Posted July 20, 2006 Report Posted July 20, 2006 (edited) The Charly Live in Paris that I know of is only 1965 recordings from France (Paris and Antibes). This disc is highly worthwhile: essential Coltrane. It contains a rare live version of Ascension (Blue Valse) and a killer version of Naima, among other gems. It looks like this: Miles Tones contains a mixed bag of live tracks from 1956-1959 that are available on a number of boots. I think that a few of them popped up on the 56 live recording that was recenlty released by Sony/Columbia together with Milestones. A number of earlier Coltrane Half Note releases apparently confused One Up One Down with One Down, One Up. (Understandable, I guess). The former live recording comes from Birdland in 1962. The latter is from the Half Note in 65, and was released on the recent Impulse set "One Down, One Up." Edited July 20, 2006 by John L Quote
jazzbo Posted July 20, 2006 Report Posted July 20, 2006 To my knowledge none of the tracks on Miles Tones appear on that second disc of the Columbia "deluxe" reissue mentioned above (that second disc is all one concert, from Pasadena). Quote
jazzbo Posted July 20, 2006 Report Posted July 20, 2006 (edited) What I want to know is. . .where are the estates in all this? Is this their way of presenting the boots Zappa style? eMusic also has some surprising Miles offerings. Edited July 20, 2006 by jazzbo Quote

Thanks, Lon. Yes, I was confusing Sony/Columbia with Concord/Prestige. It's the new 1st quartet collection that contains a few of the tracks from Miles Tones. Right? That is a good question about emusic and boots. Quote
jazzbo Posted July 20, 2006 Report Posted July 20, 2006 Yes, that's possibly right about the Concord box. . . I don't have it. I thought differently though, that the Concord reproduced tracks that were on a Japanese Yadeon cd called. But I haven't looked at or listened to my copy of "Miles Tones" on Black Label in a long time. (And it's in Austin, and I'm in Houston, so I can't do a quick check). Quote
medjuck Posted July 20, 2006 Author Report Posted July 20, 2006 You're right: the tracks with Trane appear on the recent Concord release. But Miles Tones also has 3 cuts with Sonny Rollins from 1957 and a 1953 version of I Got Rhythm most of which is devoted to scatting by Joe Carroll. Quote
Eric Posted July 20, 2006 Report Posted July 20, 2006 There are a number of Charly boots on iTunes. I find it all to be pretty confusing, esp when you consider the European box issued by Fantasy/Pablo ago. In other words, if you have the box, which of the boots do you need? This is also complicated by some of the Impulse issues (live version of A Love Supreme) over the last couple years. Plus the fact that some of the Fantasy locations are incorrect. Plus the fact that Gambit is putting out some stuff ... Quote
