I have both of them. I missed out on the Rhino boxset, and considering what the boxset goes for these days, these releases are a great alternative for around $30 total. Mastering sounds good, and the performances are outstanding. :tup

FANTASTIC MUSIC!

The Rhino box is nice but everything that's essential is on the new double CD, in reality, Aretha's performances from set to set were very close to identical, so the double set contains everything that's really different and avoids the repetition.

I actually don't mind the repetition of the box set, but you're right, this is the distillation and even both original lps were great productions of fantastic music.

I've noticed a lotta these Rhino Handmade & Hip-O-Select releases come back in regular issue form sooner or later. Collectors' Choice Music has reissued an Eddie Hazel and 2 Allen Toussaint albums from releases that were outta print too.

I've got the King Curtis and the original Aretha album. Didn't know there was a 2 disc version. I see there are only 4 extra songs but a big heap of alternative performances by Aretha. I also see that the reprise of "Spirit in the dark" with Ray Charles is stated to be 19 minutes, as opposed to about 8. I'm not sure how much extra value you get, though.

I've always preferred the King Curtis album to Aretha's. "Young gifted and black", "Amazing grace", and "Songs of faith" are the Ree albums that turn me completely OUT!

Yeah I picked up the Aretha 2 CD. Good music. Suprisingly the sound quality is something of a let down considering it was mixed from the multis. The sound isn't bad, but certainly doesn't rival state of the are location recording of the period.

But I think it's a big improvement over the original CD, isn't it? I picked up the Aretha, very happy with it.

haven't heard the original. i think part of the problem is the mix. also, this was apparently recorded by graham's in house crew.

don't get me wrong, it doesn't sound bad. just not great. a little thin. mix is a little poor and there is significant ground hum.

Sounds fine to my tin ears.......

Sounds fine to me too. I had the original Rhino CD and the MFSL aluminum, this latest mastering is an improvement.

It's true that this was a pickup from the in-house system and, like many live recordings of the period, has some ground hum (audible occasionally) and is perhaps not too polished, but it is warm and full and has plenty of presence - and excitement.

I have always thought that it was a shame that Ray Charles did not know the words to "Spirit In the Dark" when he came out to perform with Aretha at this concert. It made the performance much less exciting than it could have been. At one point Aretha says, "Ray don't do this to me." I can't imagine what it is like expanded out to 19 minutes!
