why did she always use a bass player- was that just her style or what? is there an offical statement on this

Some (or one) of her sleeve notes mention that she normally played live without a bass player but one was included for recording sessions. No explanation. Her bass seems fine on "Dearly beloved".

I've got it, it's great, exactly what you would expect/hope for out of that lineup, but frankly, I don't remember the mellotron. It's not prominent at all.

Exactly how I would have answered the question. I can't remember the mellotron. It's a pretty straight ahead session. I wouldn't call it fusion.

It's her best album, imo. The mellotron is on one track, just a string sound behind the organ, nothing special. Harold Vick plays his nuts off on this one and Billy Higgins is his usual jovial self.

It's a great record.
