sidewinder Posted September 23, 2006 Report Posted September 23, 2006 Indeed ! What a shame he didn't live to see 80; however he crammed more into 40 years than just about any other musician. Long may his music reverberate ! I'll spin a healthy quota of Coltrane today (starting with 'Mating Call') Quote
7/4 Posted September 23, 2006 Report Posted September 23, 2006 Amen. Birthday brodcast on WKCR until 12 pm esdt, then there's ball game. When that's over, the birthday broadcast resumes until 12 am. This is a major holiday! Quote
Hardbopjazz Posted September 23, 2006 Report Posted September 23, 2006 Happy Brithday Trane. Thanks for the great music. Quote
robviti Posted September 23, 2006 Report Posted September 23, 2006 I'm celebrating the day by attending An African Legacy: The 29th Annual John Coltrane Memorial Concert at Northeastern University in Boston. The JCMC began in 1977 and is said to be the oldest annual performance tribute to Coltrane. This year the JCMC ensemble will be joined by The Art of Black Dance and Music for a portrayal of the Black continuum from Africa through the Caribbean to the USA. chris olivarez Posted September 23, 2006 Report Posted September 23, 2006 What a force for good. If you're looking for something good in the human condition you don't have to look any further than John Coltrane. I'll forever be chasing the Trane!!!! Quote
clifford_thornton Posted September 24, 2006 Report Posted September 24, 2006 If I don't catch cold, I'll be doing a spirited homage to Coltrane on the radio tomorrow night. Quote
ep1str0phy Posted September 25, 2006 Report Posted September 25, 2006 I spent Trane's B-Day proselytizing. HB, JC. Quote

This is a major holiday! And again we celebrate St. Johns birthday. KCR is broadcasting all day, I haven't heard it yet. It seems like their server is easily overwhelmed. I'll catch it later...on the road... Amen John. Thanks for everything. Quote

In addition to the Boston-area musicians, several of whom have been participating in this event since the beginning, the Ravi Coltrane Quartet also played. Quote
ep1str0phy Posted September 23, 2007 Report Posted September 23, 2007 80 is a big one--I'd forgotten... happy birthday to a truly inspiring musician (a spin is in order)... Quote
Steve Gray Posted September 23, 2007 Report Posted September 23, 2007 Well, actually it is 81. No reason not to spin that disk though Quote
ep1str0phy Posted September 23, 2007 Report Posted September 23, 2007 (edited) Born 1926. You called it, Steve--I saw the thread title and forgot it was 2007! Still spinning some Trane today, though... Edited September 23, 2007 by ep1str0phy Quote

Chuck Nessa Posted September 23, 2007 Report Posted September 23, 2007 I remember the news of his death as if it was last year. Damn, time does fly. More than happy I had a few "live" experiences - "classic" quartet, quartet + Shepp and the final quintet. Quote

DukeCity Posted September 24, 2007 Report Posted September 24, 2007 ...and instead of having birthday cake, maybe I'll have a bit of this: I had a rehearsal today. When we scheduled it a while back, I mentioned that it would be Trane's b-day, so the singer in the band made sure we had some Sweet Potato Pie in celebration!!! YUM!!!! Quote
