DMP Posted October 19, 2006 Report Posted October 19, 2006 I have next to nothing - how about some suggestions where to begin? Quote
Harold_Z Posted October 19, 2006 Report Posted October 19, 2006 I just took a fast peak at what's currently available under Bobby's name at CD Universe. I would go with the Live At The Roosevelt Grill series for starters. Great stuff...PLUS Vic Dickenson! A lot of the Bobby Hackett I espescially like are things under Eddie Condon's name on Commodore, Decca and Columbia. Hard or expensive to find on the issues I have, but I did see this Quadromania. It has A LOT of the Commodore sides. All of the important ones. I don't know how these quadromania issues sound, but the repetorie and the price is sure right. Click here for tunes etc Quote
slide_advantage_redoux Posted October 19, 2006 Report Posted October 19, 2006 I would add that there is a lot of schlock out there under Hackett's name. He recorded a lot of records with lots of strings. A lot of overly produced nonsense. Of course, his beautifully melodic playing somewhat saves the show, but its a shame that the producers seemed to deem it necessary to put him in such settings. Quote

Late Posted October 19, 2006 Report Posted October 19, 2006 DMP — I'd check out Hackett's sides under the Classics (France) label. Some great music there (and, yes, with a few clinkers peppered into the mix). Quote
LAL Posted October 20, 2006 Report Posted October 20, 2006 Lots of good stuff on this one - V-Disc parties... Quote
Brownian Motion Posted October 20, 2006 Report Posted October 20, 2006 1943: The Complete World Broadcasting Jam Session I like this one. Quote
montg Posted October 20, 2006 Report Posted October 20, 2006 Try the collaborations with Teagarden for Capitol Coast Concert/Jazz Ultimate My favorite Hackett is from the Condon Mob Mosaic set. His quartet session cut for Columbia in 1950 is outstanding. Plus, later in the Mosaic box he's featured accompanying Lee Wiley. I'm not recommending the entire Mosaic box just for the Hackett--unless you dig the Condon style of music--in which case I'd recommend springing for the Mosaic box (the Condon Mob box that is. The Hackett Mosaic box is a mixed bag). Quote
chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted October 20, 2006 Report Posted October 20, 2006 yes, he is featured on a lot of my jackie gleason string lps Quote
DMP Posted October 20, 2006 Author Report Posted October 20, 2006 Thanks for the suggestions. I've already ordered a few. (Avoiding the "Collectables" stuff for now - they seem to be the easy listening type material referred to above.) Quote
BruceH Posted October 20, 2006 Report Posted October 20, 2006 I think the Teagarden collaboration for Capitol, Jazz Ulitmate, is a great place to start. (We all need more Hackett.) Quote

BruceH Posted October 27, 2006 Report Posted October 27, 2006 You know the old saying: "Either you GET more Hackett, or you just can't...Hackett." Quote
