Dan Gould Posted November 26, 2006 Report Posted November 26, 2006 Does anyone have any info on Philly Joe's 'Round Midnight on the Lotus label? AMG just says "Excellent Italian set with sorely neglected Dizzy Reece on trumpet." Does anyone know who else is on the record, and is anyone familiar with it? Thanks! Quote
JSngry Posted November 26, 2006 Report Posted November 26, 2006 Lotus as I've known it was a bootleg label that often issued material from the similarly bootleg Joker label . This is probably a live date captured on tape & then released on the grey market. Quote

Spontooneous Posted November 26, 2006 Report Posted November 26, 2006 From the cover (Lotus LOP 14.073): Reece, tp; Ben Jedig (I assume that's Bent Jaedig), ts; Larry Vuckovich, p; Isla Eckinger, b; PJJ, d. "Recorded at Pesaro, Italy, 1966." Four tracks: "That's Earl, Brother," "It Don't Mean a Thing," "'Round Midnight" and one credited to Reece called "Percy." Quote
chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted November 26, 2006 Report Posted November 26, 2006 why wouyldnt u wanna give them money 4 a live philly joe date? they can take my wallet, and then give me back the amount of money --they-- think --I-- deserve to have Quote
brownie Posted November 26, 2006 Report Posted November 26, 2006 Dan, it's a bootleg, no doubt about it. But it's a good live date in OK sound. Philly Joe is in top form throughout and leads a cohesive group with Reece shining. Don't think I have anything else with Ben Jenig but he is an alright sax player! Quote

Hey I got no problems with that. How do you think I got to know about the Lotus label in the first place? Quote

Anyway, it's not from Pesaro, but from the Pescara Jazz Festival (a couple hundred miles down south), on July 18, 1969. It was the second set of the evening; first one on stage was the Bill Evans Trio (on a Lotus bootleg as well). If you take a look here http://www.pescarajazz.com/flash/index.htm and then click on "PJ 1969", the complete program of the festival will pop up (in the Gallery there's also a photo of Philly Joe before -or after - that concert). luca Quote

Wish I had been able to attend some! Quote

Dan Gould Posted November 30, 2006 Author Report Posted November 30, 2006 (edited) I passed on this one in favor of satisfying more of my blues jones. But I can say that the dealer ships quick (just don't expect a lot of communication), so if anyone wants to grab it its right here sealed for $6. edit: FYI, shipping is a little steep at $3.50 for media, $8 for Priority.
