chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted November 29, 2006 Report Posted November 29, 2006 CHEWY CHEW CHEW REPORTING HERE IN MY 30 DEGREE ROOM FROM THE FREEZING COLD: saw CAT POWER tonight and she was great. her music is very soulful yet not overpouring and in your face but more mellow and nice. her real name is chan. she has made 7 albums, and her backup bank were all from memphis. it even had a few string players, although t hey were used sparingly. her new cd is called THE GREATEST. and it is pretty great. you know me, chewy, and i dont listen to the new sounds the kids are listening to, so it is a pretty high compliment when chewy finds something decent from 2006 Quote
.:.impossible Posted November 29, 2006 Report Posted November 29, 2006 I like a lot of Cat Power too, chew. For some reason, my brother is on the fence. I think it has more to do with her success-to-talent ratio than anything though. I think she's fine. The Greatest is a nice album. Quote

Having been given a copy of the new one and spun it a fair amount, I can say it's really very good. I'm pleased. Yes, she is quite the looker! Quote

Quincy Posted November 29, 2006 Report Posted November 29, 2006 Check out how she was 10 years ago. Nude As The News on youtube Love that geetar. She was famous for her stage fright and meltdowns during shows but she sobered up this year and those things are apparently a thing of the past. And now all bronzed and beautiful (and helpless dancer, though I love it) on Letterman earlier this year: Living Proof on youtube The Greatest & her covers albums are very accessible. Moon Pix, You Are Free and What Would The Community Think are less so but may be more rewarding, though you'll likely have to spend more time with them to figure them out (if you ever do.) She's not married either. She noted in the NY Times during her self-imposed detox that she had Miles on repeat while in her apartment, leading a friend of mine to email me with "Clean and sober. Miles on repeat and ready to settle down. Are your bags packed?" Quote
Werf Posted November 29, 2006 Report Posted November 29, 2006 (edited) I love Chan (pronounced Shawn), and "The Greatest" is her greatest (although I do like her earlier, more dissonant stuff a la "Nude as the News"). Her record is one of my favorite pop platters of the year, and Matador released it on vinyl in a gorgeous RTI pressing. Tasty. Edited November 29, 2006 by Werf Quote
chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted November 29, 2006 Author Report Posted November 29, 2006 ooo! im happy u guys like her, even though her album isn't entitled: THE COMPLETE MATADOR CAT POWER SESSIONS, 1996-2006 Quote
.:.impossible Posted November 29, 2006 Report Posted November 29, 2006 (edited) I see a little Ashley Simpson jig in her step on that Living Proof clip. Intentional? .:.Cary (pronounced Carry, Shawn's my wife's name(seriously)) Edited November 29, 2006 by .:.impossible Quote
Adam Posted November 30, 2006 Report Posted November 30, 2006 So she is actually performing? I went to a Cat Power show a few years ago and it was one of those where she talked nervously and coouldn't even get through a song. at that time I swore not spend money on her live any more. But The Greatest is a good album. Quote
blake Posted December 5, 2006 Report Posted December 5, 2006 So she is actually performing? I went to a Cat Power show a few years ago and it was one of those where she talked nervously and coouldn't even get through a song. at that time I swore not spend money on her live any more. But The Greatest is a good album. Yes, her tour for The Greatest has gone off without a hitch as far as I've heard. I caught her show in Dallas and she did fine. Interesting enough, in a recent interview (conversation actually) she credits Anthony Braxton (among unnamed others) with giving her the confidence to perform live. "And then I moved to New York and my best friend who played drums with me started taking me to all these free jazz shows-- Anthony Braxton, different stuff, real experimental improvisational stuff. And that gave me the confidence to actually physically be on stage. I saw that, dude, those people weren't judging. That gave me the courage to be up there and turn my back to the audience, because it wasn't about rock'n'roll projection, so I felt comfortable." Cat Power Interview Quote
