Rooster_Ties Posted December 12, 2006 Report Posted December 12, 2006 (edited) At work at the moment (away from my stash), or I'd be able to post a MUCH better list to get us started. Just off the top of my head, there's... -- "Straight up Straight Down" from "Introducing Duke Pearson's Big Band" - is that the only Chick tune on this date? (and if I remember correctly, Chick wasn't on this date - was he?) -- Two or three (or four?) tunes from two (or three?) Blue Mitchell BN albums (all with Chick, I'm pretty sure) -- One (or two?) tunes from Donald Byrd's "The Creeper" (with Chick). Let's build a full list. Anything NOT on BN?? Any withOUT Chick on the date?? What was the first (earliest) cover of a Chick tune that didn't have Chick on the date?? Primarily looking for versions of these tunes recorded in the 1960's. (Or at least tunes Chick clearly wrote in the 60's -- but maybe were recorded on non-Chick leader-dates in the early 70's.) PS: I'll edit this first post as titles are added to the thread (and as I'm able to check my own collection at home tonight). I always seem to have thread-topic ideas when I'm away from my resources to start them properly. Edited December 12, 2006 by Rooster_Ties Quote
mikeweil Posted December 12, 2006 Report Posted December 12, 2006 Hubert Laws recorded three Lps for Atlantic in the 1960's, partly with Chick, and several of his tunes. Don't have the time to post the details, please consult AMG. Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted December 12, 2006 Author Report Posted December 12, 2006 (edited) Here are the tracks from the Blue Mitchell Mosaic (via the AMG). I'll have to look up what albums they're from later... 11 Chick's Tune Corea 9:37 13 Perception Corea, Mitchell 5:41 28 Tones for Joan's Bones Corea 6:38 29 Straight up and Down Corea 6:39 Edited December 12, 2006 by Rooster_Ties Quote
JSngry Posted December 12, 2006 Report Posted December 12, 2006 There's a version of "Windows" from 1/05/66 that was recorded at a Mercer Ellington Septet session (w/Chick on piano), by a quartet of Paul Gonsalves, Corea, Aaron Bell, & Louis Bellson. It can be found (and retitled by somebody as "Ugh") on New Mood Indigo, a Doctor Jazz LP that's probably been out on CD somehow. Wasn't released until 1985, though. Chick seems like he never went to a session w/o a tune or two. Don't know if they'd been requested beforehand or not, but the cat seemed to be somebody who always had tunes ready for a session. That's smart. Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted December 12, 2006 Author Report Posted December 12, 2006 OK, from Donald Byrd's "The Creeper" (according to the AMG)... 13 Samba Yantra Corea 9:35 17 Chico-San Corea 6:45 Quote

Rooster_Ties Posted December 12, 2006 Author Report Posted December 12, 2006 Miles's band played Chick's "This" several times in 1969. Oh yeah, almost forgot about that one. I've got a couple versions myself, but it's easy to overlook (since it isn't credited properly on any of the grey-market issues of this material. Thanks for the reminder!! Quote

Rooster_Ties Posted December 12, 2006 Author Report Posted December 12, 2006 (edited) Two tracks from the Elvin Jones BN Mosaic. I certainly remember the first one (a piano-less date, the one with Lee Morgan!!). But I sure don't remember the second one -- is Chick on that one?? - I checked elsewhere online, and he sure is. (I obviously don't know my Elvin set as well as I thought I did.) Again, this is from the Mosaic (via AMG), not at home to check on the deails myself (at least not yet)... 14 Inner Space Corea 6:33 40 La Fiesta Corea 6:06 Haven't a clue what the album titles are for these two (I'll look 'em up later) -- I experience nearly all the Elvin box as just one big release, for the most part. Guy Berger Posted December 12, 2006 Report Posted December 12, 2006 Didn't Bobby H record one of Chick's tunes? ("Windows"?) Guy Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted December 12, 2006 Author Report Posted December 12, 2006 (edited) Didn't Bobby H record one of Chick's tunes? ("Windows"?) Guy Why yes he did. Good catch!! At least one, anyway... I just remembered Chick was on "Total Eclipse" -- and they did Chick's "Matrix". Was Chick on any other Hutcherson dates that I'm forgetting?? Edited December 12, 2006 by Rooster_Ties Quote
mikeweil Posted December 12, 2006 Report Posted December 12, 2006 Was Chick on any other Hutcherson dates that I'm forgetting?? AFAIK Total Eclipse was the only one. Quote

Don't have the time to post the details, please consult AMG. Thanks Mike. The AMG wasn't much help. Doesn't appear there were any Chick tunes on Laws' first album (The Laws of Jazz), if the AMG review can be trusted. The review of Laws' second album (Flute By-Laws) sort of implies that there weren't any Chick tunes -- but the tracks aren't fully listed to be sure, and Laws' third album (Laws' Cause) isn't conclusive either. Anybody know these dates, and can you fill in the details?? -- are/were there any Chick tunes to be found?? Thanks!! None to be found on this Collectables two-fer of Laws' first two albums either (here), FWIW. Edited December 13, 2006 by Rooster_Ties Quote

Rooster_Ties Posted December 13, 2006 Author Report Posted December 13, 2006 (edited) Look here: Chick Corea Disco. Thanks for the link -- and I had actually done some searching around that same site earlier today (although no song-writing credits are given, drat!!) From that site... I did wonder if this was perhaps Chick's first ever recorded tune (from only his second ever recording appearance)... Sonny Stitt Septet Thad Jones (tp) Sonny Stitt (as) Chick Corea (p) Larry Gales (b) Carlos "Patato" Valdes (cga) Willie Bobo (tim) Osvaldo "Chihuahua" Martinez (per) NYC, June 11, 1963 Are You Listening Roost RLP 2253 Amigos - Little Red Suede Shoes - Ritmo Bobo - I Told You So - Chick - Senor Jones - Autumn Leaves - * Sonny Stitt Goes Latin (Roost RLP 2253) Edit: I did check the AMG, to no avail. (Yes, I know, I need a discography --- does it count at least a little that I did spring $100+ for the 2nd edition of the complete BN discography a few years ago?? -- but that doesn't even have composer credits, so I'm still left asking questions here.) marcello Posted December 13, 2006 Report Posted December 13, 2006 (edited) It in the ASCAP database under: COREA ARMANDO ANTHONY It seems that Chick is also a BMI publisher too, but that song " Chick" is not in their database. Edited December 13, 2006 by marcello Quote
