I've met several folks who knew Barry and they all said what a sweet guy he was. Some also mentioned his massive record collection. All of those folks said that stuff after lamenting his substance problem.

Edit to say (about the collection) Bob Porter told me "He even had some of your records".

His drug problem manifested rather late in his young life. That, combined with weight and terrible eating habits, killed him a a tour bus in the middle of the desert in Arizona while on tour with Buddy in 1986.

This was his favorite breakfast:

1 lb. of egg noodles

I stick of butter

I package of Philadelphia Cream Cheese

Boil the noodles, drain, mix in the butter and cream cheese and spice to taste.

He had a huge and extensive record collection that would make most of the collectors here drool. But no matter what he did, whether it was studing List, collecting records and oriental rugs or digging a new substance, he was a completist and obsessive.

I knew there was a mojor problem when I went to his place not long before he pass and saw that almost all of his records were gone. I got in his face about it; he got embarassed and soon he went on tour.

Great, great pianist who had he lived and started to compose and found his voice, would have been a star today.

He played a Summer at Bradley's, staying at Bradley Cunningham's apartment while he were out summering somewhere. He played the dinner hour. One night Barry Harris was the featured pianist and Barry and I stuck around. Later that night Barry Harris, Tommy Flanigan, Barry Kiener played songs round robin style for more than a hour. They all loved him, of course.

Mr. Nessa,

Just your terminology, as is spelled out in the post you responded to.

So, when talking about it (addiction, abuse) USE those terms.

Thee point I would make to you is to make your point CLEAR.

To quote you " His Substance was the tool" I still maintain, that this, is nebulous and not

accurate.

At any rate, Addiction is something I am familiar with.

As a CAC III I deal w/ many addicts.

I have always enjoyed yr releases, and wish you the absolute worst (JK)!

TOOT, TOOT!

As a lame English major, I stand by my post. His problem was a substance. Your abuse might be my sustenance.

what the hell does this have to do with my releases?

Well, that is a silly reply, sirrah.

His problem WAS substance ABUSE. Dig? No? Check it.

My post had nothing to do with your post, why would say that?

His problem was SUBSTANCE ABUSE, period.

As per yr sustenance, if it rely's on my abuse, well...that sounds like yr problem. (?).

Stand anywhere you feel comfortable 'round yr post.

It really has NOTHING to do with yr very amazing releases.

Respect to you MR. Nessa!!!

Chuck & I had a blowup over a misunderstanding about one of my shows, but he's no champion of drug addiction in jazz, and I know he's seen the damage up close. The whole history of drug abuse in jazz is messy & complex and difficult to talk about without lapsing into cliches of one kind or another. Everybody has to bear his or her cross differently.
