ghost of miles Posted January 19, 2007 Report Posted January 19, 2007 I suppose it had to have happened...from Space Age Pop Music: Soon after that, he followed up with an even bigger musical belly flop, the dreaded Kenton/Wagner, which featured a 25-piece group tackling Johnny Richards arrangements of themes from Richard Wagner's operas, including "Ride of the Valkyries." To a jazz fan, this is one of the most execrable recordings in the archives. To space age pop fans, of course, its morbid allure is almost irresistable, although it's the kind of record you love to have in your collection but keep far away from the turntable. Good Lord. Quote
JSngry Posted January 19, 2007 Report Posted January 19, 2007 Kenton/Wagner/Richards They say these type things come in threes... Quote

B. Clugston Posted January 19, 2007 Report Posted January 19, 2007 Wasn't Kenton Wagner's stage name? Quote
ghost of miles Posted January 19, 2007 Author Report Posted January 19, 2007 Kenton Wagner. Sounds like the name of the Bionic Composer. Quote

couw Posted January 23, 2007 Report Posted January 23, 2007 some passages are dead funny really, like the latin version of the Walküre. heheheh. somehow I found a second hand copy very cheap and very unplayed. Quote
porcy62 Posted January 23, 2007 Report Posted January 23, 2007 (edited) I am with Woody Allen on this: I can't listen to that much Wagner, ya know? I start to get the urge to conquer Poland. Edited January 23, 2007 by porcy62 Quote

I enjoy many Kenton albums, but this one is quite dreadful, really. Beautifully played and recorded, though, and Scott Yanow gives it 4.5 stars on amg, so what do I know?! Quote

Actually, I quite like this album ... the only problem is that I usually listen to it when I am eating take-out Chinese food, and then two hours later I am hungry for POWER! Quote
alocispepraluger102 Posted January 24, 2007 Report Posted January 24, 2007 i certainly prefer it to his 'national anthems of the world,' and much of the neophonic stuff. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted January 24, 2007 Report Posted January 24, 2007 It is an insult to Wagner. In some camps, pretty hard to do. Quote
