Free For All Posted March 20, 2007 Report Posted March 20, 2007 I searched and didn't find a thread that discussed this in the general sense, so..... Since my divorce I'm no longer part of the big insurance package we had (homeowners, auto etc.) and because of that my auto-only insurance rate is MUCH higher (almost doubled!). Screw THAT! I've been shopping around and have found a dramatic variation in rates. I guess my question is, do the places that have the lower rates (like Progressive, for example) still have a reasonable level of service? Do they drop you once you have to make a claim and BS like that? My driving and credit records are excellent, so I'm not concerned about that. I just don't want the "deal" if it ends up being a crappy one. But there is enough of a difference that I'm considering going with the lower option, if it seems to be worth it. Since I did one of those online rate comparisons, I've been getting calls from any and everyone who's in the biz. Advice, please. Thank you. Quote
Dan Gould Posted March 20, 2007 Report Posted March 20, 2007 Paul, let me recommend 21st Century. My wife's family got a great deal from them (partially because two of the three dealers are 60 or older) and when our Progressive policy expired last month, we got a quote from them, and it was about $200 lower than anyone else's. Can't say what their service will be like, but the price was right. And if you go with them, feel free to mention my name as a referral - they give gift cards to any customer who brings someone new in. Quote

They used to be military only, but I think they have expanded it. Quote
J Larsen Posted March 21, 2007 Report Posted March 21, 2007 AIG has made an offer to acquire the remaining shares in 21st Century that they don't already own. If it goes through, this would quite likely impact the quality of service at TW. Quote
DukeCity Posted March 21, 2007 Report Posted March 21, 2007 When I shopped around a few years ago, GEICO ended up being my choice (that was before all the lizard commercials). I did the deal over the phone, and remember them being pretty helpful in getting me reasonable rates with reasonable deductibles. I haven't had any big claims, just some windshield repair, so no telling whether they would remain so friendly. Quote
J Larsen Posted March 21, 2007 Report Posted March 21, 2007 Is fusura still around in some incarnation? The big auto insurers used to have a centralized quote system on line so that you could compare rates without having to go from insurer to insurer. Quote
alocispepraluger102 Posted March 21, 2007 Report Posted March 21, 2007 westfield insurance company(WIC) has been fine with me, and most reasonable, for 20 years. Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted March 21, 2007 Report Posted March 21, 2007 (edited) We like and use Country Companies for all our insurance (home, car, etc... - including some extra liability insurance because of an easement on our driveway), but I started with them many, many years ago with just auto insurance (gosh, almost 15 years ago, come to think of it) -- and they were very reasonable. I've never had a claim, so no idea if they'll jack up your/my rates if/when something like that happens. But I've otherwise been pretty happy with them. Might also just be the luck of the draw that I've got a really good agent (who is a Country Companies agent, not an independent agent), who -- frankly -- has really saved me a bundle by pointing out ways to reduce my overall rate(s) through multiple various legitimate discounts I could qualify and ask for -- discounts that I would have otherwise never thought to ask for (or had any clue about). He really showed me all(?) his cards (or so it would seem), and helped me work the system in my favor (at least as best I can tell). For instance, I was able to keep my "good grades" discount (that I started with WAY back when I was still a college student) – and I was able to keep that "good grades" discount all the way until I turned 30, at which time I suddenly got the same discount for just having turned 30. (Who would ever thought to ask for (or expect) a "good grades" discount for nearly a whole decade after one had gotten out of college??) Seems like a good company, but again - it could easily be that lucked out and just have a really good agent. PS: BTW, my agent's daughter is his office manager (and she really handles a ton of stuff for him, I suspect - especially as he's getting older), and she is THE single nicest and maybe THE most professional personal I think I've EVER dealt with in almost any situation I can think of. chris olivarez Posted March 21, 2007 Report Posted March 21, 2007 Last time I went shopping for auto insurance I got the best deal from State farm but I might go back out there and see if I can get a better deal the next time out. Quote
Aggie87 Posted March 21, 2007 Report Posted March 21, 2007 Even within the same company (i.e. Allstate), you will get different quotes from different agents. I'd make ALOT of calls before you settle on any one, Paul. Quote
