dsockel Posted March 25, 2007 Author Report Posted March 25, 2007 Why am I looking for these contacts? I have over 1,000 reel-to-reel tapes of radio broadcasts, club dates, etc. from the 50s-70s and am exploring the feasibility of releasing some of this material commercially. One of our first steps is to contact the artists' estates and determine if they are interested in participating, and if so, at what cost for the rights. We have alot of the greats and alot of the shuld have been regarded as greats in the collection. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide. Dave Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted March 26, 2007 Report Posted March 26, 2007 Anything, by any chance, from the "never-known-to-have-been-recorded" (even live) version of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers?? -- specifically the line-up with both Woody Shaw AND Tyrone Washington?? Would have been from sometime in '69, if I remember correctly. A fairly narrow window -- perhaps as short as a few months. I can provide more exact dates (or a least the window of dates) if that would be helpful. My request is sincere. Quote
bertrand Posted March 26, 2007 Report Posted March 26, 2007 From Mike Fitzgerald's chronology at http://www.jazzdiscography.com/Artists/Blakey/chron.htm: April? 1969: Woody Shaw-tpt; Tyrone Washington-tsx; George Cables-p; Scotty Holt-b * Wollman Auditorium, Columbia University, NYC (February 24, 1969) [db 3/20/69 p.15] * Loeb Student Center, New York University, NYC (March 3, 1969) [db 3/20/69 p.15] * Fillmore East, NYC (March 9, 1969) [db 3/20/69 pp.14, 52] * Black Bottom, Montreal, Canada (April? 1969) [Coda 6/69 p.34] * Café La Boheme (early April-early May 1969) [Voice] [this is questionable considering the below activity] You've got three pretty solid dates there if DB is to be trusted (does anyone have these issues to see what they say exactly?). The first two are at Colleges, so there might be tape. The third is from the Fillmore, so I'm SURE there's a tape. Didn't the Bill Graham estate start putting up stuff on the net for downloading? I bet so far it's only rock, but I haven't checked yet. I need to do so, being the Airplane/Hot Tuna nut that I am. Does anyone have the link? Bertrand. Quote
bertrand Posted March 26, 2007 Report Posted March 26, 2007 Some more mouth-watering gigs from the chronology. Note that the Blakey estate started a site (Artblakey.com) but it's been inactive for a few years. They might be reachable through this site in terms of trying to get the ball rolling on issuing tapes. April 30, 1967: Bill Hardman-tpt; Joe Henderson-tsx; McCoy Tyner-p; Juni Booth-b * - Longhorn Jazz Festival, Austin, TX (April 30, 1967) [db 6/15/67 pp.26-29] Again, does DB list any of the repertoire? Was this line-up billed as the Messengers or just an Art Blakey all-stars? And then there's this: * November 3, 1966 Jimmy Owens-tpt; Wayne Shorter-tsx; McCoy Tyner-p; Ben Tucker-b; Elvin Jones, Tony Williams-d * - concert in Japan (November 3, 1966) [unrecorded] [-TN] * - Japanese tour (until November 17, 1966) [db 12/1/66 p.13] "After Coltrane, I did a little stint with Art Blakey. We went to Japan, and the Japanese put together a tour of drummers - Elvin Jones, Art Blakey and Tony Williams, and I was part of that band. When we'd get through at night there was a piano in the lobby of the hotel, so I sat down and played by myself. One night Art snuck in - I didn't know he was listening - but then he said, 'Ooohh, so you like to play by yourself, huh?' The next night, he said, 'Ladies and gentlemen, here's McCoy Tyner, by himself!'" - McCoy Tyner, db 3/2000 p.14. * Berlin Jazz Festival, Berlin, Germany (November 3-6, 1966) [db 7/14/66 p.15] [uncertain if Blakey performed at all, considering above Japanese date] Wayne, McCoy, Elvin, Tony, Art - all together!!! Wayne played with Art just one more time - a big all-stars reunion on 10/9/89. Jackie Mac was on the gig as well. Some of it is out on CD. Bertrand. Quote
chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted March 26, 2007 Report Posted March 26, 2007 can you share some more info on what kind musicans are represented on your tapes, and how you got them all, etc? Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted March 26, 2007 Report Posted March 26, 2007 I see bertrand has done all my homework for me. Thank you!! I know I'd seen those dates specifically listed somewhere. Quote
bertrand Posted March 26, 2007 Report Posted March 26, 2007 It so happens I've been working on a Blakey thing, so the timing was good. I'll post in the live shows later today. If you live in the DC area, put April 1st aside for a smoking show. Bertrand. Quote
Dan Gould Posted March 26, 2007 Report Posted March 26, 2007 The third is from the Fillmore, so I'm SURE there's a tape. Does anyone have the link? Linkie. They've had a number of excellent blues shows up for a while - B.B. King, Albert King and many others. If you've got a soundcard that can play and record simultaneously, you can record the stream and get a decent sounding CD out of it. Quote
bertrand Posted March 26, 2007 Report Posted March 26, 2007 Thanks for the linkie. No Blakey (I even tried Blakely just for fun), but there is Miles from 3/7/70 (already out on CD), and also from 3/6/70 (which I believe is not out officially). I need to look into this further, seeing that these are Wayne Shorter's last gigs with Miles, and, as some of you may know, I'm rather fond of Mr. Shorter's playing Bertrand. Quote
