Strange Strings

Seems to be a fine reissue of Strange Strings by Sun Ra. From Atavistic Records:

SUN RA & HIS ASTRO-INFINITY ORCHESTRA: STRANGE STRINGS DELUXE REISSUE CD

(ALP263CD)

NEW!!!

A deluxe reissue in a new O-Card pack from the UNHEARD MUSIC SERIES-

released in conjunction with EL SATURN Records !!!

"...all this considered, Strange Strings, the culmination of all Sun Ra¹s

string studies, is without doubt one of Sun Ra¹s master works. Strange

Strings, standing squarely alongside Sun Ra¹s other epics of the mid 1960s,

Atlantis and Magic City, absolutely shines as his most painterly of

expositions in its surface richness and play with deep space and

coloration. He has offered no world more strange than this in his entire

output as a composer and orchestrator. These explorations are only hinted at

in scattered moments on other recordings from this period. The full exercise

of his very original and very imaginative powers as musical adventurer and

visionary bursts forth in the masterful cosmic clattering of Strange

Strings." - Hal Rammel, 2006

went to visit atavistic and this one wont be available till mid-june. damn!

They often ship on orders from their website in advance of the "release date".

Can't guarantee that, but I've received CDs a couple of weeks in advance.

I ordered my copy from Atavistic directly and it arrived today.

Awesome sound!

Here is a blog entry from Hal Rammel on "Strange Strings":

This is an interesting quote from the article:

"It is an honor to participate in the first CD release of this remarkable record and the first of many collaborations between Atavistic and Adam Abraham's El Saturn Records."

Seems like a lot more is coming from Atavistic and El Saturn Records!

what is up with the bonus track?

This release from Atavistic supplies further confirmation of this line of inquiry in a very unusual bonus track featuring Sun Ra playing squeaking door in the shape-shifting depths of percussion, delay, and reverb.

so alton abraham is still alive and the original el saturn research master tapes are accounted for?

It would be fantastic if it means that many more of the never reissued Saturns are going to come out on CD. It would have the effect of depressing the market for $300 copies of these LPs on ebay.

Doubt it. LPs are collectible independently of their CD-reissue status. Ra's got serious stock, as do Tina Brooks, Hank Mobley, Mike Westbrook and everybody else...

With both ArtYard Records and Atavistic Records planning to issue several of the El Saturn records in high

quality it will be good times for all Sun Ra enthusiasts!

From the Art Yard web site:

"Art Yard is an independent record company that specialize in releasing Sun Ra's El SATURN series of recordings, Sun Ra is arguably one of the most influential and important of all 20th century composers. Art Yard is established for the sole purpose of bringing Sun Ra's lesser-known works to a new generation of listeners. In cooperation with Ihnfinity Is and Enterplanetary Koncepts."

Up.

I was just commenting on this album over in the Sun Ra thread and I thought this would be a better place to talk about this one. I just picked this one up yesterday and over the course of a day, I've must've spun this disk about 10 times and I am absolutely floored by it! I can see why Ra fans would put this one near the top; the overall surrealness, lo-fi production and the vast array of intruments really push this one into classic status. For me, this one's up there with Atlantis, Jazz in Sihl., Fate in a Pleasant Mood, and the Heliocentric Worlds. This has got to be the one of the far out things I've ever heard Ra do, and I absolutely love it! And that track with the creaking door...classic! This is great stuff!
