B. Goren. Posted June 1, 2007 Report Posted June 1, 2007 Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club was released exactly 40 years ago. What an innovative album was it!!! Quote
porcy62 Posted June 1, 2007 Report Posted June 1, 2007 Indeed And before someone will start arguing that Revolver was more relevant, or that other bands/musicians were more innovative, let us enjoy the birthday. A couple of link about the Summer of Love. http://www.sfgate.com/summeroflove/ http://www.summeroflove.org/main.html Quote
Teasing the Korean Posted June 1, 2007 Report Posted June 1, 2007 Sgt. Pepper is a unique album in the Beatles catalog, in that it is the only one on which all four members sport facial hair simultaneously. And I don't need to tell you that bands whose members all sport facial hair are incapable of making great records. Quote

porcy62 Posted June 1, 2007 Report Posted June 1, 2007 Was this the beginning of prog rock? No, prog rock's birthday city is this: Quote
brownie Posted June 1, 2007 Report Posted June 1, 2007 I remember buying the album when it came out. Still have that copy. Haven't listened to it in ages! Quote

7/4 Posted June 1, 2007 Report Posted June 1, 2007 Was this the beginning of prog rock? No, prog rock's birthday city is this: That's where Styx, Kansas and Dream Theatre are coming from...when I think of Prog Rock, I'm thinking of the land east of Atlantic. Zappa and Beefheart would be the only American bands that show up on my radar. Quote

I stuck to mono to the bitter end until the stereo invasion! Quote

Teasing the Korean Posted June 1, 2007 Report Posted June 1, 2007 Hey, I have two mono copies of it ...and one stereo I have two mono copies, a stereo, AND the CD (stereo). How embarrassing. I might spin my US Capitol mono copy tonight. It still has the cutout sheet intact and the psychedelic inner sleeve. Quote

sal Posted June 1, 2007 Report Posted June 1, 2007 One of my favorite all albums, and a key player in making me a human being who loves music. May it be listened to by all generations for all time! Quote
Eric Posted June 1, 2007 Report Posted June 1, 2007 One of my favorite all albums, and a key player in making me a human being who loves music. May it be listened to by all generations for all time! I can't think of any other album which is so often described as overrated. I ignored it myself for years. But a couple years ago, I bought a copy for my 7 year old daughter and with her, rediscovered it all over again. I can't think of many albums that are as fun to listen to straight through - ear candy abounds, but the tunes and performances are right there too. Is it their best? Is it in the all-time top 10 rock records? Who cares - I really dig it! Quote

Will you still be sending me a valentine, Birthday greetings, bottle of wine? Edited June 1, 2007 by porcy62 Quote
Guy Berger Posted June 1, 2007 Report Posted June 1, 2007 Yeah, this album is probably overrated by the "general public", but I think at this point the critical counter-reaction has run its course. The Beatles had better albums, big whoop. Favorite tunes on the album: "A Day in the Life" (it goes without saying), "Getting Better", "Fixing a Hole", "Good Morning", "When I'm 64", "She's Leaving Home", "Lovely Rita" Guy Quote
kh1958 Posted June 1, 2007 Report Posted June 1, 2007 I've still got my mono LP, plus the CD release. Quote
sal Posted June 1, 2007 Report Posted June 1, 2007 Always thought "Being for the Benifit of Mr. Kite" was an underrated tune Quote
