The Magnificent Goldberg Posted June 12, 2007 Report Posted June 12, 2007 My wife (the gardener around here) goes out every evening about this time (dusk) killing slugs. She stays out until she's got 20. This evening, she just came in and reported that she'd only found 17! She must be winning! What do you do about slugs in the garden? MG Quote
Spontooneous Posted June 12, 2007 Report Posted June 12, 2007 Rod's correct. The beer trick works every time. On slugs, and some people I know. Quote

7/4 Posted June 12, 2007 Report Posted June 12, 2007 Is beer more humane than cutting their heads off? MG Ask yourself: what would you rather do, drown in beer or have your head cut off? I'd go for the beer...may do that right now... Quote
Jazzmoose Posted June 12, 2007 Report Posted June 12, 2007 Is beer more humane than cutting their heads off? MG Depends on the brand... Quote
jazzbo Posted June 12, 2007 Report Posted June 12, 2007 The slugs I have problems with wear ties. . . and won't go near cheap beer. Quote
7/4 Posted June 12, 2007 Report Posted June 12, 2007 So what's this all about then...what did slugs ever do to you? Is it the apophallation? Is it because they're hermaphrodites? Do they steal your weed? What's the deal? Quote
Jazzmoose Posted June 12, 2007 Report Posted June 12, 2007 Hey, you allow the slugs to hang out, and next thing you know, it's squirrels! Quote
7/4 Posted June 13, 2007 Report Posted June 13, 2007 We had squirrels in our attic once. I can't imagine what the slugs were doing up there. Let's put it this way...I don't want to know...some unholy slug stuff probably. Did Ozzy eat slugs? No, bats. I think that says it all. Maybe he eats slugs, but doesn't tell anyone about it. Not even Sharon. Quote

The soft, slimy bodies of slugs do seem like perfect sushi...except (from the folks at Wiki): Care should be taken when consuming slugs. In certain cases humans have contracted parasite-induced meningitis from eating raw slugs. Flash freeze them like any other Sushi... Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted June 13, 2007 Report Posted June 13, 2007 Used to buy quarts of Blatz beer and pour it into tuna cans. Empty the cans of dead slugs in the morning. Those suckers were killing Ann's hostas. Stopped misusing beer and use something called "Escar-Go" now. Sprinkle the stuff on the plants and the little suckers die a slow death. Quote
robviti Posted June 13, 2007 Report Posted June 13, 2007 Hey, you allow the slugs to hang out, and next thing you know, it's squirrels! beer works with squirrels too. they typically leave just before the check comes, though. Quote
J Larsen Posted June 13, 2007 Report Posted June 13, 2007 I hate squirrels. Don't get me started... Quote

Kalo Posted June 13, 2007 Report Posted June 13, 2007 Pour salt on 'em and watch 'em dissolve... Squirrels? Never tried that with squirrels. My guess is that, unlike slugs, they'd just get all squirrelly and scurry up the nearest tree. Quote
Jazzmoose Posted June 13, 2007 Report Posted June 13, 2007 Yeah, squirrels don't dissolve; it's more of a quick cut... Quote

If we knew they did, then drowning in beer might be better than a quick death. Has anyone measured drunkenness in slugs? MG Quote
mikeweil Posted June 13, 2007 Report Posted June 13, 2007 I kill slugs with some special granulate that's attractive only to them - after eating it they simply hide away and pass out. We have plenty of protected snails in the garden, so no beer or whatever would kill the snails. We had two squirrels - one drowned in the rain barrel (six weeks without rain this spring, seems it was real thirsty), and my wife accidentally smashed the other's head when closing the kitchen window ..... so that problem is solved. I don't have slugs, but, I've got my neighbor's chickens that I'm going to blow to smithereens if they get into my tomatoes. Quote
