medjuck
I just got e-mails from CD Universe announcing Clifford Brown at The Cotton Club 1956 & Chet Baker in Koln with Dick Twardzik. Since they're both on Lonehill I have to ask: Have these been available before on another label?
jazzbo
I only know about the Clifford Brown. . .unless the Chet is one that was released last year. . . . Actually, I have the material on the Brown on tape from a collector, but haven't seen either of the sessions on cd before, though they may have appeared on Philology (not comprehensively familiar with that catalog). Aftab
If I had to guess, the Chet material is the same as this: Chet Baker with Dick Twardzik Not very good sound, IMHO.
Jim R
If I had to guess, the Chet material is the same as this: Chet Baker with Dick Twardzik Not very good sound, IMHO. Isn't that the disc Medjuk is asking about? At any rate, I do NOT trust Lonehill when they claim that ANYTHING they release is "previously unissued". I've literally lost track of how many times they've claimed that and been wrong. I'm not saying that I know they're wrong here, but... I have a Philology CD from the early 1990's titled "Chet In Europe, 1955" (W42 2). Here's the basic data: Recorded September 21, 1955 Chet Baker,Jean Louis Chautemps,Ralph Schecroun,Eddie De Haas,Charles Saudrais, Dick Twardzik,Jimmy Bond,Peter Littman c.t.a.,cheryl,darn that dream, chekeetah, four, exitus ,walkin', indian summer, all the things you are
Aftab
The CD I listed previously isn't on Lonehill, but I'd bet that the material is the same.
Bluesnik
The CD I listed previously isn't on Lonehill, but I'd bet that the material is the same. the CD isn't on Lonehill but on one of their associated labels, the one they use for live tapes. Have these been available before on another label? they're both releases of collector live tapes, not label owned material. if they have been released before it will have been in the same manner as now. and i think i heard the Köln concert was unreleased before. i think there's also an unissued Dutch concert (Den Haag?) from that tour. or wasn't that also recently released by the same label? i think so. i'm normally not very interested in this kind of live tapes, since they tend to be of very very low sonic quality. they're normally fan recordings made on some home taperecorder. jazzbo
Actually in my opinion the Brown material is for the most part better sonically than other collector items (the Bee Hive, etc.)
Bluesnik
haven't heard that one, so i can't speak. have heard the Chet Köln concert though. i'm spooked with the new version of the board. my previous post suddenly disappeared. then when i was rewriting it i saw jazzbo's post and it was there again. i'm also alternatingly logged in and not logged in. and yesterday i couldn't log out. maybe that means my ghost has to stay resident here like the phantom of the opera. With these simple and unpretentious words Brownie introduced himself to the audience of the Cotton Club in Cleveland, Ohio, on May 28, 1956. And indeed he played the trumpet, with a fire and excellence that earned him renown worldwide. May 28 was the opening night of a week-long engagement for the Max Roach-Clifford Brown Quintet, featuring Sonny Rollins on tenor sax, Richie Powell (Bud Powell's younger brother) on piano, and George Morrow on bass. Despite the exceptional talent of the individual band members, the quintet proved to be more than the sum of its parts. The Cleveland Cotton Club performances contained on this package -issued here for the first time ever- were recorded on amateur equipment and include sets played by the quintet on May 28, May 29 and June 1, 1956. As a bonus to these amazing performances, there is another previously unissued set: a radio broadcast by the same quintet coming from the Town Casino, in Buffalo, New York, recorded on February 26, 1956. Recorded: Live at the Cotton Club, Cleveland, Ohio. CD1, #1-5: Recorded on May 28, 1956. CD1, #6 & CD 2, #1-2: Recorded on May 29, 1956. CD 2, #3-4 & CD 3, #1-4: Recorded om June 1, 1956. *Bonus tracks: CD 3, 5-7: Same Personnel. Radio broadcast from Town Casino, Buffalo, New York, February 26, 1956. jazzbo
I've had tapes of these performances for some time. The Buffalo date the only source I knew of was DEEP. He had this from his father, who taped the broadcast.
medjuck
So how good are these both sonicly (sp?) and more important, musically?

jazzbo
So how good are these both sonicly (sp?) and more important, musically? The Brown recordings from Cleveland have decent sound and are HOT playing wise.
Quasimado
The new Dutch release has brilliant Chet - driving and inventive - he's all over the horn. Twardzik is fine too. Sound is no problem to my ears, considering the concert setting ... Q
