AllenLowe Posted July 27, 2007 Report Posted July 27, 2007 (edited) haven't had a gig in 5 years - live in a town run by 25 year olds - local bookers don't return my phone calls or emails, yet Anthony Braxton just asked me to come down and see him to discuss a project - what's wrong with this picture? I hate this fuckin' town = AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH feel better now......................no need to go out and kill a kitten - Edited July 27, 2007 by AllenLowe Quote

AllenLowe Posted July 27, 2007 Author Report Posted July 27, 2007 would like to - problem is finding a new day job at age 53 - I find age discrimination is the new American way - my wife (59) is finding same - given two decent jobs and health insurance and 2 kids and an elderly parent, mobility is limited - Quote
.:.impossible Posted July 27, 2007 Report Posted July 27, 2007 Screw the 25 year olds then. Make your own gigs. Make people interested. Make people want to come out and see you. When the 25 year olds come around, you can tell them to go f themselves. Quote
AndrewHill Posted July 27, 2007 Report Posted July 27, 2007 Hope the project with Anthony Braxton comes through. Quote
ghost of miles Posted July 27, 2007 Report Posted July 27, 2007 Allen, if you're ever able to hit the road for 2-3 weeks, let me know--could probably get you some sort of gig here in B-town. (Make sure to bring some "Jews in Hell 2007 Infernal Midwestern Tour" t-shirts along for us hicks in the sticks... ) Quote
7/4 Posted July 27, 2007 Report Posted July 27, 2007 It could be worse, NJ - 15 miles from the Holland Tunnel. I sent my resume to NASA this morning. Things are pretty dead until after Labor Day. Quote
AllenLowe Posted July 27, 2007 Author Report Posted July 27, 2007 tempting - a midwest tour - it could happen - let me do a little thinking - as for making our own gigs - yes - working on that now but facing some oddball obstacles - had a venue interested in a little local weekend festival - along comes one of the booker's friends - says, hey, we've got an idea for a little weekend fest - same dates as I proposed - guess who they book? I was ready to strangle the twerp. Another problem is getting local media to cover anything but indie rock, which makes promo difficult - however, I have a few ideas and I am working on it, putting together some alliances with younger guys who have, at least, heard of Julius Hemphill - rocker guys, great musicians, and we get along well. I'm hoping the Braxton thing turns into something. We've been talking for quite a few years; at the least it'll be a nice chance to compare notes - Quote

I hate this fuckin' town = AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH feel better now......................no need to go out and kill a kitten - That's a drag, my condolences. If it'll make you feel any better I'm proud to say I'm turning gigs down; have already refused two pit-show stints this year. Just got sick and tired of traveling 70+ plus miles for chump change. You ain't missing much. Damned if you do, damned if you don't. Good luck/fun with Braxton. Quote
AllenLowe Posted July 28, 2007 Author Report Posted July 28, 2007 I know what you mean, and I became burned out on certain kinds of "background music" gigs, which no longer seem worth it unless there's a lot of cash involved - right now I'd just like to find a consistent place to compose/play - Quote
ghost of miles Posted July 28, 2007 Report Posted July 28, 2007 Man, I have THE idea for a midwestern event--you, Braxton, and some like-minded musical cohorts playing a Monster Truck event at an Indiana arena. That'll give 'em some "background music"! Quote

AllenLowe Posted July 28, 2007 Author Report Posted July 28, 2007 that's unfortunate - I like the monster truck idea - maybe also to drive it through the local gallery/performing space that won't book my band - Quote
Guest donald petersen Posted July 29, 2007 Report Posted July 29, 2007 hey it's a similar scene here in ny also-anyone who was doing anything interesting is washed up or dead. Quote
