ghost of miles Posted August 19, 2007 Report Posted August 19, 2007 (edited) Just ordered a copy of this new anthology on NYC from late 1970s to present. A board member--whom I shall cunningly disguise here as "he who walks in Brooklyn"--has a heavy hand in the proceedings, and Allen Lowe checks in with an essay as well. ghost of miles Posted August 19, 2007 Author Report Posted August 19, 2007 Anticipating a good read, partly because of the contributors & partly because I'm really interested in that period of NYC (only been there once, actually, circa 1991). The whole early/mid-70s Verlaine/P. Smith/Richard Hell music scene interests me too (presumably this book's chronological spectrum begins just as said scene was beginning to fizzle out); fun to read FROM THE VELVETS TO THE VOIDOIDS, which induces a kind of "man, wish-I-coulda-been-there!" feeling, along with PLEASE KILL ME, which depicts the seedier, social-climbing side of events & leaves you thinking (or left me thinking, anyway), "Whadda buncha jerks!" Undoubtedly better recommendations will follow from other, more NYC-oriented board members, but I was pretty jazzed a few months ago to pick up a used copy of Luc Sante's LOW LIFE, which goes way back into old Manhattan and points surrounding. (He's in this new book too--essay that appeared a couple years back in NY Review of Books, perhaps?) Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted August 20, 2007 Report Posted August 20, 2007 (edited) After 3 messages, this thread has most/all posts deleted and edited. What a pile of shit. I really don't understand some folks unwilling to stand up and defend their posts and/or positions. Edited August 20, 2007 by Chuck Nessa Quote
ghost of miles Posted August 20, 2007 Author Report Posted August 20, 2007 ?? A bit mystified... I've been offline the past several hours--did people post & delete? I edited my first post b/c I realized my initial ID of the other board member might have been more overt than he/she would prefer... think that's why 7/4 edited his first post as well. Have folks been posting attacks on the book and/or its contributors? Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted August 20, 2007 Report Posted August 20, 2007 The edits you mention are responsible for my post. I think all this hiding behind screen names is horseshit. If you have opinions, act like you have balls and defend them. Quote
ghost of miles Posted August 20, 2007 Author Report Posted August 20, 2007 Still a bit mystified--nobody was changing opinions in the two cases mentioned... I just thought the book looked really good, ordered it, and wanted to tout it here--esp. since two board members are involved. My initial post pretty much pegged the other contributor besides Allen Lowe, and 7/4's initial response identified that contributor directly. (And that's all he did... no attacks or praise involved either way.) It occurred to me afterwards that the contributor might not WANT to be so readily ID'd in these parts, so I made the ID much less overt... if he/she wants to acknowledge their role, I'm sure they will. It looks like a book I & some other board members might or will like, and I wanted to draw attention to it--that's all. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted August 20, 2007 Report Posted August 20, 2007 In your first post you "exposed" a member hiding behind a screen name. Then 7/4 made note of this. Subsequent posts/edits/deletions corrected this. I love/appreciate/am irritated by "that member's" posts and wish he had the courage to stand behind them. I think all the "hiding" is diminishing to all involved. Quote
marcello Posted August 20, 2007 Report Posted August 20, 2007 Looking forward to this as I have just read "The Bronx Is Burning" and might have a couple of photos in this new book. Congrats to all. Quote

And his anthologizing is excellent! This is a great read so far, and having just done a breeze through of NY (first in several years), it really resonated. Unfortunately I wasn't able to meet up with any of our board members while there, but at least got to see the circus that the Bowery has become, even since 2003 when I was last there... Quote
