Christiern Posted September 25, 2007 Report Posted September 25, 2007 I just heard that Bob Altschuler has passed away--haven't found an obit, yet. I knew Bob fairly well when I was doing work for Columbia and CBS/Sony, but I must be frank and say that he was not someone I wished to know outside of the business. Bob may well have had one of the largest private collections of 78 rpm jazz extant. Quote
Free For All Posted September 25, 2007 Report Posted September 25, 2007 should we be searching ebay these next few weeks? So much for the grieving period! Quote
Christiern Posted September 25, 2007 Author Report Posted September 25, 2007 I suspect that he already sold the collection. Guess the obit will contain that information. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted September 25, 2007 Report Posted September 25, 2007 Met him a couple of times - once at a NARM convention and once at a "collectors mafia" meeting at Black Rock. My memories are of a gruff personality. Quote
Free For All Posted September 25, 2007 Report Posted September 25, 2007 My memories are of a gruff personality. Now THAT'S sayin' some shit! Quote
Free For All Posted September 25, 2007 Report Posted September 25, 2007 We seem to have gone a bit off-topic. My bad. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted September 25, 2007 Report Posted September 25, 2007 Bob also gets credit as a producer of a couple of early Albert Ayler dates - "Witches and Devils" and "Goin' Home". Quote
JSngry Posted September 25, 2007 Report Posted September 25, 2007 We seem to have gone a bit off-topic. My bad. Well, I was just fixing to say, if he was such an asshole, what difference does it make? And then... Quote
JSngry Posted September 25, 2007 Report Posted September 25, 2007 Bob also gets credit as a producer of a couple of early Albert Ayler dates - "Witches and Devils" and "Goin' Home". This. So ok. R.I.P. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted September 25, 2007 Report Posted September 25, 2007 (edited) Nothing really bad about Altschuler mentioned yet. Chris said he didn't like him and I (with less experience) said he seemed "gruff". Unless something else surfaces we should respect his many years of work, regret the inevitable death and leave it at that. Edited September 25, 2007 by Chuck Nessa Quote
Christiern Posted September 26, 2007 Author Report Posted September 26, 2007 I may be saving certain inside knowledge for my book. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted September 26, 2007 Report Posted September 26, 2007 So, we'll piss and moan then. Let the guy go for now. Quote
brownie Posted September 26, 2007 Report Posted September 26, 2007 Bob Altschuler was very helpful when I was writing articles a long time ago and needed to get material (and albums) that were very hard to obtain in pre-internet days. He was working at Riverside then and could not have been nicer. Sad to hear he is no longer with us! Quote
bertrand Posted September 26, 2007 Report Posted September 26, 2007 He donated the 78s a few years ago to the Library of Congress. He gave a talk at ARSC. Bertrand. Quote
