Clifford and Bird were both active in the early 50's and their paths crossed at least once, probably more. Yet, to the best of my knowledge, there are no records/ tapes/ films etc. of these two working together ... and that is in itself remarkable, considering who they were, and the company they kept. Surely there must be something ...

So, are there any recordings of Clifford playing with this Big Skips cat?

Often misquoted, it was actually, "...plays with Big Skitch."

This question has come up before. The info provided then was that a recording does exist, but the audio quality is very bad.

Thanks for that. I did do a search, but to no avail ... any details re the recording/ tape?

I don't remember anything more specific than that. Don't think much more info was given. This may have been on the old BNBB or even the All About Jazz board. Since it was pretty much the same people posting on the old BNBB and then here, I must say I generally find it difficult to keep track of whether a discussion that happened years ago took place before or after the migration. Perhaps some other member knows more?

At least the Clifford & Dolphy tapes came out.

there must be a recording (poor quality tape) from the blue note club, philadelphia, pa, with bird and brownie from between 04. - 09. january 1954. it is reported in piet koster "bird lore" charlie parker discography (almere 2002) and also in the brownie discography by bob weir (almere 2004). similar details in the koster book of a second poor quality tape of brownie and bird at the same club on 14 - 19 june 1954 are incorrect because brownie was in california at this time.

but: there exist a privat tap of bird and brownie jamming at brown´s house in philadelphia!!

larue brown metioned this in an long interview with phil schaap in ca. june 1991 at larue´s home. schaap asked if they played together and larue brown answered that they played in philadelphia at a gig but never recorded professionally togehter. and than she continued: "...i´m in the posession of the tapes because they were done in our home and they are in the (?) bold (?) and perhaps our grandson clifford brown III will do something with them one day."

that´s the stuff every brownie and bird fanatic wants to hear...!

keep boppin´
