Turns out they play 2-3-2. I am glad they tried to play Monday. There've been too many delays for possible weekend viewers as it is!

Also, according to Buster Olney on Mike and Mike this morning the commissioner's office let both teams know on Saturday that it would NOT call a World Series game complete after 5 innings. Play would resume at the point at which a rain delay was called. At least the front offices of the teams knew. We just weren't privy to it.

Yes, Bud has some magic Commish dust that we didn't know about. Glad to see some common sense rule breaking happening (hey, while you're at it use some instant reply when it's so obvious too.) And I know the cliche about hindsight, but if he intended to use his magical powers you'd think they could have shut the game down at least 1/2 an hour earlier. If Bud was in charge of the Indy 500 they'd have to bury half the field before he decided to call it.

I looked up the days of rain between games 5 & 6 of the '75 series (that's where Tiant was moved up to game 6.) There were 4 extra days off due to rain! Whew, how on earth did the 12 year old me have the patience to wait that one out?

Phillies small ball it to a lead in the bottom of the 6th, then Baldelli ties it with a homer in the top of the 7th!

Thrilling conclusion with Phillies in 5? Or is this NOT the final game of the World Series?

------

ETA

Beautiful Phils double play in the top of the 8th leaves the Rays with 4 more outs, with Lidge warming up!

Wow! I think baseball might be onto something. Surely this wasn't on too late for the children. ;)

Congrats J.H. and Phillie fans! And a great season by Tampa Bay Paps. They sure look to be a dangerous team in the East, especially with a full season from Price!

Congratulations Phillies and their fans and thanks for easing my pain, if only just a little.

Now, the long cold winter starts. I wish I could wake up and discover its January 1st, and this is what happened in the hot stove season. I get sick of dealing with the rumors.

My Phillies won it all tonight. :)

My mother, brother and his family still live there. I was ten years old when the Phillies won it all back in 1980 (for the first time in their 97 year history). It was bitter sweet however because I remember the day of game six (when they won it all) the electric company came and turned off our electricity because we hadn't paid the bill. My older brothers and sister all went to the bar and I was left listening to the game in the dark on a transistor radio with my mom (who was never a real baseball fan). I screamed out the bedroom window but no one screamed back although I could hear the celebrations in the distance. That was the year I became a lifelong baseball fan. It's never left me and I still get a little weak kneed thinking about it. And even though I've lived in Seattle for many years now, I must admit it brought a tear to my eye watching my old team win it all tonight. I been getting text messages from old friends with pictures of all the celebrating in the streets (not just Broad Street but every fucking street throughout the city) all night.

People like to dis on the Philly sports fans, but they are the loyalist most devoted fans in the world. Go PHILLY!!!

The Phillies were clearly the better team and appear (I hate to say it) well poised for next year, with perhaps only modest changes, other than the Burrell situation.

However, what the f was Maddon thinking, not bringing in Price in the sixth or the seventh innings. If he's worried about having Price hit or having to hit for Price, give me a break. Those were just bonehead moves and may have cost them this game.

Yeah, apparently he's not familiar with the double switch. I have to say, strike 2 to Hinske was bullshit. Not only was it not a strike, I can't believe Kellogg made that call without even an appeal. Not that Hinske is a sure thing, but you hate to see that call at that point in the game/series. Phillies took it a game sooner than I figured, but that's testimony to two things: 1) how much the Sox series took out of the Rays, and 2) just how goddamned powerful the Phillies are.

Alright, now that that's out of the way, who's going to start the 2008-2009 Hot Stove thread?

Congratulations to the Phillies for winning it all, and a tip of the cap to the Rays for getting this far and playing their hearts out.

I can't wait to see what the ratings are gonna be like when they come back. I'd like to think that the MLB front-office won't be scratching their heads wondering why hardly anybody watched this series.

"Gee Bud, do you think it was because it was an east coast series targeted at a west coast audience that couldn't care less?"

"Nahhh, it couldn't've been that. It's because the Yankees or Red Sox weren't playing. That's why nobody watched."

Okay, that part may be true to the extent that there are more fans of either of those two teams than the number of fans of both the Phils and the Rays combined. Still, who had their head up their ass(es) when they scheduled this thing? Were they LOOKING for justifications to move the series to cable? "Bad ratings, guys. Let's move it to ESPN, or Turner, or...... oh, how about VERSUS???"

End of rant.

Yeah, apparently he's not familiar with the double switch.

Maddon knows the double switch and used it with RF in a previous game. His reasoning was twofold: 1) He really liked the matchup of Howell vs. Burrell 2) With it being such a close game he was afraid of burning through his pitchers and not having enough left.

It's always tricky to use long-term planning when you're facing elimination, and it ends up he was on the losing end. And remember, Kaz had only pitched 4 innings and Wheeler had been roughed up last time out.

All that said I'm inclined to pinch hit and there and hope it all works out for pitching later, but things can get ugly when it doesn't.

You have no disagreement from me (or probably anyone else) about Maddon being manager of the year. However, I'm not sure Manuel will win it as they were expected to compete, if not repeat, and you have to give some consideration to the Marlins manager. I don't think anyone thought they would be that good.

I'm with you, Johnny. One of the greatest nights of my life! How about Chase's fake to first and throw to the plate! What a play! Go Fightins!

YES!! My Phillies won!!

I watched it at home- wish I had a Schmidt's beer......it would have been cool to be watching the game at a bar in South Jersey (where I'm from). I had season tickets (partial) from 88-92 then I moved down here- I did get to attend Game 5 of the WS in 1993. Tickets were $65.00 back then. I tried getting WS tickets this year- no luck.

Utley's play was great!! Being a former infielder- I've done that play many times but never had anyone go home- I think Utley was surprised that Bartlett ran. If it was earlier in the game- I don't think he goes home- being a 3 inning game made things different.

I recorded the Phillies feed on my XM radio- so I'll listen to the game and postgame this evening and feel closer to Philly.

Gotta load up on Phillies WS gear!! Gues what I'd like for Christmas?

Is there a definitive camera angle of the base running on this play? I haven't seen one yet that shows Bartlett rounding third -- whether he hesitated or was going all the way; what the third base coach was doing. That might put Utley's play in a little better perspective. If they didn't have a camera on third base, Fox screwed up royally. I've yet to see that shot. Thank goodness they captured the reactions of every single individual in the stadium at the final out though ... <_<

Wow.

Here it is a little over 24 hours later and I'm still trying to comprehend what happened last night. What a roller coaster ride the last 3-4 days have been here for everyone in Philly! After 25 years and all of the nearly there but just coming up short endings I can't tell you how great this feels. This win was a cathartic experience on so many levels. Philly sports fans are used to their teams snatching defeat out of the jaws of victory(Game 6 1993 WS, Super Bowl XXXIX, etc.) I guess Cubs' fans or Red Sox fans' can relate but then again they had other teams in their towns that had won championships to lessen the blows. Not us. 98 seasons(100 if you count the '94 baseball strike and the NHL strike) without a championship. This losing thing really had a psychological grip on the city. And when the Rays came back and tied the game a good two innings after the game should have been halted the thought going through everyone's mind here was,'Oh no. Not again." I talked to my dad on Tuesday morning and he said he was so mad at Selig that he could not fall asleep until 3:00am. Tuesday truly was a dreadful day. Cold, rainy, windy - just awful. The kind of weather we might get in January. It just seemed so ominous, the lowest of lows. How could we go from up 3-1 w/ Cole Hamels on the mound, he of the un-hittable change up, cruising along before the rain - now out of the game? It wasn't supposed to end like that. And now with one of the most improbable outcomes to one of the most improbable World Series games ever played it's all forgotten. Mitch Williams? You're off the hook. Donovan McChoke? Love ya. Lindros? Come here you knucklehead. AI? Practice is canceled.

After the game last night I went out to Broad Street w/ my video camera just so that I could have my own record of the celebration. It was awesome. There were probably somewhere around 50,000 fans out on Broad, between South Street and City Hall last night. Complete strangers were coming up to me and giving me hugs, offering me beer, laughing/crying/shouting with glee. This morning as I was walking my son to his preschool people were giving him high fives when they saw his Phillies cap. The women who runs the store where I get him a bagel every morning gave him a freebie when she saw his hat. Nice.

I tried to get some World Championship gear at 3 or 4 different stores today but there were lines just to get into the stores. F that. So I'll just be wearing a battered old cap and my Obama button that says,"GO PHILLIES!" on it for the parade tomorrow. Maybe my red Phillies t-shirt w/ "Utley 26" on the back if it warms up to the low 60's forecast. My wife's school gave her kids the day off figuring, rightly, that most of the kids are going to cut school anyway. Can you blame them? Hell Jamie Moyer cut school to attend the 1980 parade. And now look at him!

I'm so happy for the this city, the Phillies, the fans, Harry Kalas, and my dad and my father-in-law who were both wondering if they would live to see another championship in Philly. I'm especially happy for Pat Burrell who had to endure more grief from the fans than anyone. He also played on all of those crappy teams but to his credit his stuck it out and now's he's a fan favorite. His double breaking an 0 for World Series slump led to the Phils' scoring the winning run. What an ending to his career here in Philly. Thanks Pat.

Phew. What a ride.
