Sundog Posted October 3, 2003 Report Posted October 3, 2003 Don't forget to play a little Von today. If you don't have any go buy some! B) Quote
mikeweil Posted October 3, 2003 Report Posted October 3, 2003 (edited) This board will ruin my slipping budget line! I remember buying Freeman's Atlantic LP 'cause Rahsaan produced it, and encountered one of the most original tenor sounds of all time! Later bought the two Nessa LPs, they're great - a belated thanks to Chuck is in order! Happy Birthday Von Freeman! Edited October 4, 2003 by mikeweil Quote
DrJ Posted October 3, 2003 Report Posted October 3, 2003 What an original - and a great musician. Happy birthday to a living legend! Quote
Free For All Posted October 4, 2003 Report Posted October 4, 2003 Happy Birthday Vonski! Many fond memories of the jams at the Apartment Lounge and the Green Mill. Quote
JSngry Posted October 4, 2003 Report Posted October 4, 2003 Von is the very embodiment of EVERYTHING I dig about jazz. Live long and prosper. Quote
JSngry Posted October 4, 2003 Report Posted October 4, 2003 FEELIN' IT NOW ALL the Nessa albums THE IMPROVISOR Those will getcha started. Quote
Guest Chaney Posted October 4, 2003 Report Posted October 4, 2003 The only Von I've heard is "The Improvisor". I borrowed it from the library, popped it into my office (crappy) sound system and thought I'd give it a cursory listen while drinking my morning coffee. NOT possible! I don't know why, but I didn't at all expect what I heard. The avant garde elements of his playing were (for me) quite unexpected and VERY welcome. From AMG: Von Freeman, while not per se a free jazz player, does exhibit traits commonly associated with the avant-garde: a roughly-hewn, vocalic tone; a flexible, somewhat imprecise approach to rhythm; and a fanciful harmonic concept. I'm looking forward to discovering more of Von's discography in the very near future. Quote
paul secor Posted October 5, 2003 Report Posted October 5, 2003 This is a couple of days late, but belated birthday greetings, Mr. Freeman! Would that we all could all could keep our spirits and lives as fresh as you have kept yours. Quote
pryan Posted October 6, 2003 Report Posted October 6, 2003 A recent vinyl pickup was Von's album entitled YOUNG AND FOOLISH. An introduction to his discography for me, and I will definitely be checking out more of his stuff. Quote
