This board will ruin my slipping budget line!

I remember buying Freeman's Atlantic LP 'cause Rahsaan produced it, and encountered one of the most original tenor sounds of all time! Later bought the two Nessa LPs, they're great - a belated thanks to Chuck is in order!

Happy Birthday Von Freeman! birthday.gifcake.gif

The only Von I've heard is "The Improvisor". I borrowed it from the library, popped it into my office (crappy) sound system and thought I'd give it a cursory listen while drinking my morning coffee. NOT possible!

I don't know why, but I didn't at all expect what I heard. The avant garde elements of his playing were (for me) quite unexpected and VERY welcome.

From AMG:

Von Freeman, while not per se a free jazz player, does exhibit traits commonly associated with the avant-garde: a roughly-hewn, vocalic tone; a flexible, somewhat imprecise approach to rhythm; and a fanciful harmonic concept.

I'm looking forward to discovering more of Von's discography in the very near future.

A recent vinyl pickup was Von's album entitled YOUNG AND FOOLISH. An introduction to his discography for me, and I will definitely be checking out more of his stuff.
