BillF Posted April 21, 2008 Report Posted April 21, 2008 Sad news. A worldwide phenomenon. Among the names of the fallen personally mourned by me are Mole Jazz, Dobell's, Reckless Records, The Polar Bear, Decoy, Tower Records, Virgin .... Quote
Hardbopjazz Posted June 19, 2013 Report Posted June 19, 2013 Real sad news, today I decided to go to J&R Music. Their jazz CD inventory has been reduced to half an isle. There was hardly anything worth buying. J&R was the last really good CD store in NY. Quote
Blue Train Posted June 19, 2013 Report Posted June 19, 2013 (edited) J&R was the last really good CD store in NY. Huh? What are you looking for/buying to say they're the last good CD store? Edited June 19, 2013 by Blue Train Quote
Hardbopjazz Posted June 19, 2013 Report Posted June 19, 2013 J&R use to have a whole floor of a building devoted to jazz. Now hardly anything. Quote
sidewinder Posted June 20, 2013 Report Posted June 20, 2013 (edited) J&R use to have a whole floor of a building devoted to jazz. Now hardly anything. I remember that place less than 10 years ago being 'stacked to the gunnells' with jazz. Including several copies of that behemoth 'Jazz In Paris' box. I bought much of the 'Free America' series from there. Sad to hear.. Edited June 20, 2013 by sidewinder Quote

7/4 Posted June 20, 2013 Report Posted June 20, 2013 Really!?!? I haven't been there since Winter. Quote
sgcim Posted June 20, 2013 Report Posted June 20, 2013 That's sad about J&R, but we know what NYC is all about... I scored many great CDs and LPs there. I still remember when one of their employees defiantly put Steely Dan in the Jazz section, with something like, "Yes, they deserve to be here!!!". Another time, I heard them talking about a chick they knew who was a Frank Strozier groupie. I used to go into Manhattan every week, and spend twelve hours just looking at records at Tower, J&R, Rockit Scientist, etc...Now they're all gone. I haven't gone into Manhattan in years- it's just a big tourist attraction- Bloomberg's destroyed it... Quote
Steve Reynolds Posted June 20, 2013 Report Posted June 20, 2013 DMG is still there Hard to get to but they have a huge selection of great music Quote
Blue Train Posted June 21, 2013 Report Posted June 21, 2013 (edited) I think I understand him. Last place to get pre-60's style Jazz CD's in NYC. Edited June 21, 2013 by Blue Train Quote
kh1958 Posted June 21, 2013 Report Posted June 21, 2013 Not true; there's the Jazz Record Center. Quote
brownie Posted June 21, 2013 Report Posted June 21, 2013 How about Academy records? http://www.academy-records.com/ Plenty of interesting jazz items there! They were doing good business (in their two stores) when I last travelled to NY... Quote
Blue Train Posted June 21, 2013 Report Posted June 21, 2013 There are a lot of great record stores still left....which is why I think he's limiting it to CD's and a certain time period. Quote
Hardbopjazz Posted June 21, 2013 Report Posted June 21, 2013 J&R not only had a very large selection, but the prices were great. Quote
