ghost of miles Posted October 7, 2003 Report Posted October 7, 2003 I have only one or two of the albums included in this box, so I'll probably be picking it up: MJQPrestigePablo Quote
clandy44 Posted October 7, 2003 Report Posted October 7, 2003 I have none so this is a sure thing-all of their earliest recordings. Excellent. Quote
clandy44 Posted October 7, 2003 Report Posted October 7, 2003 GOM-you can pre-order this (as I just did) at CD Universe for $46.88 plus about $5 in shipping. Quote
JSngry Posted October 8, 2003 Report Posted October 8, 2003 Well hey Boy Howdy! The Prestige stuff is usually considered their "best" work by those who don't care for the more Third-Streamish directions of a lot of the Atlantic work, and their Pablo sides were nealy unanimously hailed as a return to that earlier sond, so this set looks like it might very well be a winner. I might even get me one my ownself. Quote
John Tapscott Posted October 8, 2003 Report Posted October 8, 2003 Oh yeah, this is going to be a great set. My brother-in-law was asking me the other day what I wanted for Christmas. Now I know! Top of the list. Quote
DrJ Posted October 8, 2003 Report Posted October 8, 2003 Cool boxed set, and kind of surprising it hadn't been done a long time ago. Count me in. Quote
Claude Posted October 8, 2003 Report Posted October 8, 2003 But it's kind of artificial to combine the Prestige recordings from the 50's and the Pablo sessions from the 80's. Anyway, it's good to see this music in a well-presented form. Fantasy should release more box sets, and not just Bill Evans live 8CD sets Quote
mikeweil Posted October 8, 2003 Report Posted October 8, 2003 (edited) Well, that's label-centered reissue production, I'd say, don't they all do it that way, combine material from all they labels they bought up over the years? A box set seems to have more prestige (no pun intended ? ) than a double CD with either half. Since I do not have any of the Pablos and hate the scattered way the Prestiges are on the OJC CDs, I'm gonna get me one. And the sound on the later Fantasy boxes is very good IMO. Alfred Posted October 8, 2003 Report Posted October 8, 2003 A must have!!! The only LP I own from their Prestige period is "Django". I'll order the set from CD Universe (Don't like the zyx-stuff here in Germany). Quote
mikeweil Posted October 8, 2003 Report Posted October 8, 2003 I doubt they will manufacture it here, they imported the Monk Prestige Box and I'm sure they will import the MJQ box just the same. Don't like ZYX either, but it will certainly be cheaper with them; Zweitausendeins will probably offer it three or so months later. Quote
couw Posted October 8, 2003 Report Posted October 8, 2003 Zweitausendeins will probably offer it three or so months later. my thoughts exactly Quote
Claude Posted June 5, 2004 Report Posted June 5, 2004 Zweitausendeins has been offering this 4CD set for several months, the price (40 Euro) is good but not as low as the (non-discounted) ZYX sets. Can somebody comment on the sound, compared to previous CD reissues? Has it been remastered with the K2 20Bit process, like the Monk/Prestige set? The two Prestige albums "Concorde" and "Django" have already been reissued on K2 remastered CDs previously. Quote
mikeweil Posted June 5, 2004 Report Posted June 5, 2004 The box distributed by ZYX is manufactured in Germany, but seems to identical in sound etc. with the US box set. I couldn't find any hint on the mastering technique applied. Sound of the Prestige recordings is better than any previous edition I had, didn't have the Pablos before, so I cannot comment on these. Joe Tarrantino did the remastering. Quote
Claude Posted June 5, 2004 Report Posted June 5, 2004 Thanks Mike. If Tarantino did the remastering, it was done at the Fantasy studios, and not at JVC as the K2 CDs. But he did a very good job on some of the latest Fantasy CD and SACD reissues. Quote
Brad Posted June 6, 2004 Report Posted June 6, 2004 The US box likewise has no indications other than the Tarantino reference. My guess is that it's not. Quote
Abution II Posted June 6, 2004 Report Posted June 6, 2004 The set is currently on sale from BMG Music for between $30 and 40. Even with their steep shipping charges, this is a very good deal. Quote
