jimi089 Posted May 6, 2008 Report Posted May 6, 2008 I just received word that Franz Jackson passed away this morning. Quote
Christiern Posted May 6, 2008 Report Posted May 6, 2008 (edited) Very sorry to hear of Franz's passing. He lived a full and productive, hopefully satisfying life. Here is a photo of him (his back, actually) taken September 7, 1961 at Chicago's Bird House jazz club, where I recorded Franz as a leader and a sideman. This is a break during one of the sideman sessions. Franz is listening to Lil Armstrong (that session's leader) while with Pops Foster speaks to Preston Jackson, and Darnell Howard and Al Wynn listen to drummer Booker Washington. Here's a link to the Franz Jackson web site. Edited May 6, 2008 by Christiern Quote
Christiern Posted May 6, 2008 Report Posted May 6, 2008 And here he is in March, 2005 (seated) with Ira Sullivan, Von Freeman, Eric Alexander, and Johnny Griffin. and at that same event, still performing and looking good at age 93! Quote
Free For All Posted May 6, 2008 Report Posted May 6, 2008 (edited) Sorry to hear this. Always seemed like he'd be around forever (same as with Young John Young). RIP Edited May 6, 2008 by Free For All Quote
JSngry Posted May 6, 2008 Report Posted May 6, 2008 The above photo in context: That's the 3-18-71 issue of db. I had been into jazz for about six months at the time and didn't really know anybody (or anything). But that picture grabbed me, made me think that this is what tenor playing is all about. That picture still does that to me to this day, and when I finally heard Franz Jackson on tenor, I realized that, yes, this is what tenor playing is all about, no matter how you do it. Rest In Peace, and thank you! Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted May 7, 2008 Report Posted May 7, 2008 A very nice and interesting man. I have fond memories of traveling to NY with Franz and a bunch of other Chicago musicians for a concert at Carnegie Hall. Franz took some of us to a place for lunch - he said Roy Eldridge had recommended it. It was a cafeteria a few blocks from the hall and the food was terrible, but Franz said it was wonderful and ate two plates of the stuff. Quote
