Big Al Posted November 7, 2008 Report Posted November 7, 2008 So I got JOHNNY SMITH FAVORITES by the Johnny Smith Trio today, and I'm all excited because I've got its companion DESIGNED FOR YOU at home, now I can make that CDR of these two LPs onto one CD! So I get home, and I'm lookin' for the other Johnny Smith record.... and lookin'.... and lookin'..... I don't even remember getting rid of it! And if I did, what the fuck was I thinking? a. I love the sound of Johnny Smith b. I love it even more when he's in a trio without a piano c. There's a shitload more records in my collection I would've gotten rid of before I'd gotten rid of THAT I'm sure I'll find it and if I don't, I see it pop up from time to time. But it just irks me that I'd get rid of a record like that without even thinking about it! Or it could really be around here and I've totally lost my mind.... Quote
papsrus Posted November 7, 2008 Report Posted November 7, 2008 Wake up Big Al! You're having a nightmare! Quote
JohnS Posted November 7, 2008 Report Posted November 7, 2008 I hope it's around there somewhere. I hate that when I can't find an album, I get a nasty sick feeling. I have to go through them again and again. Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted November 7, 2008 Report Posted November 7, 2008 Sometimes an LP gets lost in a neighbouring gatefold sleeve. MG Quote
jostber Posted November 7, 2008 Report Posted November 7, 2008 Is it this Johnny Smith: http://www.csindy.com/gyrobase/Content?oid=oid%3A3153 I have not heard anything by him, and beginning to think I should. Quote

Big Al Posted November 7, 2008 Author Report Posted November 7, 2008 It's that Johnny Smith . . . you should check him out! What Lon said. Smith has an instantly recognizable yet simply gorgeous tone. Quote
Big Al Posted November 7, 2008 Author Report Posted November 7, 2008 Al, I bet you didn't get rid of the lp, I bet it's around the house. I really really really REALLY hope so! After listening to FAVORITES last night, I coulda cried. Thankfully I'm coming to Austin around Thanksgiving, so hopefully I can find it at Waterloo or Cheap-O or the other vinyl shops around there. Maybe I should just save myself the trouble and just order the Mosaic instead. Quote
papsrus Posted November 7, 2008 Report Posted November 7, 2008 Don't worry. It'll turn up as soon as you find a replacement copy. Quote
paul secor Posted November 7, 2008 Report Posted November 7, 2008 I had a similar thing happen. Somehow one LP from my Complete Charlie Parker Savoy Sessions box ended up missing. I searched and searched, never found it, and ended up buying a used copy of the box to replace the one LP. Hope you find your copy of the Johnny Smith. Quote

Teasing the Korean Posted November 9, 2008 Report Posted November 9, 2008 Any chance it somehow got sandwiched into the Jimmy Smith section? I've done boneheaded things like that before, especially in the "Jones" section. Quote
Big Al Posted April 22, 2009 Author Report Posted April 22, 2009 FINALLY found me another copy! Yay! Wonder how long it will be before I find the "lost" copy around here? What do you wanna bet I just bought back the copy I sold? That'd just figure.... Quote
fasstrack Posted April 22, 2009 Report Posted April 22, 2009 Johnny Smith is a class act. I learned Golden Earrings copying from his LP as a kid. On Verve, but I can't remember the title now. CRS kicking in, or maybe it's horseradishes.....Had the guitar sticking out from a cut-out on the sleeve. That guitar just gleamed, and to a 17-year-old kid...... Try doing that on a puny CD...... Johnny Smith has to be one of the top people ever to play and record on my instrument. And he walked away from it. Usually guys just drop dead. But beside his amamzing technique and taste in tunes, the transfer of classical repertoire like Sevilla to pick-style guitar, etc., he just presented the guitar with so much class. I can imagine how he felt when the guys with 18 Marshalls came along. Probably why he split. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted April 22, 2009 Report Posted April 22, 2009 Al, did you get it in Austin or up north? I haven't seen one in my traipses through the shops. But I almost bought back a David Eyges record I sold... Quote
Big Al Posted April 23, 2009 Author Report Posted April 23, 2009 Al, did you get it in Austin or up north? I haven't seen one in my traipses through the shops. But I almost bought back a David Eyges record I sold... Up here in Hurst at Doc's Records, which is quickly becoming my favorite vinyl haunt in these parts. Not the biggest selection in the world, but the prices are more than reasonable, and I've never walked outta there empty-handed! I don't know what happened to their website, but if I can find the URL, I'll post it tomorrow. Quote
