I've been asked to record and submit a voice-over audition for an online "classic books on audio" start-up. I'd love to get the gig even though the pay is tiny ($1200 to voice and edit 6 books is cheap, to say the least but I need the cash and if they succeed, the money will improve) but the audition consists of the first two paragraphs of Around the World in 80 Days and having only read the book many years ago, I profess to having no idea how to pronounce "Phileas".

Thanks in advance!

Don't know either my take on it would be something like Philly - uss as in wuss

Thanks VB. The other possibility would be FILE-uss, which would be similar to the FINE-uss pronunciation of Phineas Newborn.

Well, I would go for Philly-as but that's just my midwestern accent. Since Fogg is supposed to be a British character, I would think that all syllables are pronounced, so not File-as. One thought would be to take a look at the movie version (with David Niven) or even the crappy remake, and see how it pronounced there.

Yeah, my wife said to check if its in Netflix for downloads, but I said "no, I'm sure the collective knowledge of Organissimo will come through."

I always thought it was "Filly-us"---first part rhymes with "silly" the second with "US" and in "rust" or "must." But that's just me, and I'm usually wrong about such things.

Best of luck Dan. That could be a sweet gig for you. :tup

Thanks Chuck, I got nice feedback from the producer

The tone was great and the narration impeccable.

He just wants a new, slightly faster take.

Well, the bad news is that I didn't get it.

The good news is that I finished second, so if there is any problem with the guy who they chose, they'll want me to take over immediately. And, more likely, if the project is a success, I am already at the top of the list for when they produce more audio books and use different announcers.

Actually a pretty good result considering that my VO gigs have all been commercial spots previously, so having a good shot at a narration in the future is nice.

You want that the Big O Street Team look into this situation of potential instability and effect a positive outcome of stabilization?

It's like the jazz version of a Higher Power! ^_^

Weird timing for me on this topic--just yesterday I read about Orson Welles' madhouse musical version of this book in the late 1940s.
