ghost of miles Posted March 13, 2009 Report Posted March 13, 2009 (edited) I just got the new Artie Shaw Hep (the 2-CD set of 1945 Spotlight broadcasts) and noted several solos from tenor saxophonist Herbie Steward, whom I know mostly from his Four Brothers stint with Herman. Any recommendations from Organissimo posters for other sides featuring Steward? Edited March 13, 2009 by ghost of miles Quote
Big Beat Steve Posted March 13, 2009 Report Posted March 13, 2009 "Al Haig Meets The Master Saxes Vol. 3" (Spotlite SPJ 143), featuring a.o. Herbie Steward's session of Jan. 17, 1950 (Medicine Man/Passport to Pimlico/T'Aint no use/Sinbad the Sailor) Quote
jazztrain Posted March 13, 2009 Report Posted March 13, 2009 For later Steward, there was an LP on Famous Door (which may have been reissued on CD). I recall also having an LP of his on Ava -- more of an "easy listening" session as I recall. Peter Friedman Posted July 7, 2021 Report Posted July 7, 2021 Herbie Steward solos on almost every track here. Quote
mhatta Posted July 13, 2021 Report Posted July 13, 2021 Herbie Steward recorded 2 discs for the Marshmallow label in his closing years. Both are good -- one with Gene DiNovi, another with Sir Charles Thompson (and recorded on live!). Quote
