The reissue of Schwarzwaldfahrt on Atavistic's UMS contains an extra disc of unreleased material, too. I think this is Vandermark's year. So far, in 2005, he has released: Ken Vandermark feat. Marcin Oleś & Bartłomiej Brat Oleś -Ideas V5 - The Color of Memory (2cd) V5 - Alchemia (12cd) Territory Band 4 - Company Switch (2cd) FME - Cuts FME - Live at the Glen Miller Cafe Free Fall - Amsterdam Funk Brotzmann Tentet - Be Music, Night Hoxha - s/t That is 22 discs...can any other artists top that in 2005? king ubu Posted November 19, 2005 Report Posted November 19, 2005 Playing this one again: Still like this a whole lot! The mix of folsky touches (as often pulled by Guyvoronsky as by Petrova) with free (? is it free or does it just make that impession?) parts, the mingling of abstract passages with almost grooving ones (or both of that happening at the same time) makes this a very enjoyable set for me. Also, it's a disc that's pretty easy on the ears, yet never gets boring or dull... not just your run of the mill chamber jazz! Quote

Guest Chaney Posted November 20, 2005 Report Posted November 20, 2005 I had a first listen to Live At The 'Bottle' Fest 2005 today and found it to be pretty dull. For the most part, much too busy; many words used to ultimately say little. Maybe not so much a reflection on the music presented as on my current listening preferences. Quote
John B Posted November 20, 2005 Report Posted November 20, 2005 where does 'live at the 'bottle' fest 2005' fall for you? Its one of the year's better releases to my ears. ← I like Live at the Bottle Fest, but it in no way compares to the show I saw the duo perform in October. Eremite was taping the tour and Michaell Ehlers told me that an "official" cd would be released. I really hope so. Brotz and Waits were on fire and I heard no cliches that night. Quote
John B Posted November 20, 2005 Report Posted November 20, 2005 I very highly recommend the Avram Fefer / Bobby Few album Kindred Spirits, on Boxholder. It is a gorgeous album, comprised of three Fefer originals and tunes by Monk, Mingus and Duke. I wasn't familiar with Fefer prior to hearing this album and I had limited exposure to Few. I'm really looking forward to hearing their other new release on Boxholder called Heavenly Places. From what I have heard, Heavenly Places is the wilder, more fiery of the two discs. Where Kindred Spirits is composed, lyrical and restrained, Heavenly Places was recorded live, is improvised, and is more "out." Quote

Д.Д. Posted November 20, 2005 Report Posted November 20, 2005 From Utech Records newsletter: Available now: STEN OVE TOFT "Sinners' Virtue" [021] $11 Sten Ove Toft (Ryfylke, Waffelpung) initiates a repeating bit of static for several minutes before laying down the harsh noise Norwegian style. Inside the remainder of this single track is a texturally rich landscape that allows for an occasional break in the chaos to seek atonement. Recorded at Landmark, Bergen, Norway. Hand assembled and numbered. Edition of 100 cdr. PAAL NILSSEN-LOVE/ANDERS HANA "AM/FM" [023] $11 Paal Nilssen-Love (drums) and Anders Hana (electric guitar) approach their instruments as if transmitters of sound and fury. Dichotomy slowly becomes a unified colossus and back again, a lovely furor resounding then drifting away to silence. Recorded at Numusic Festival, Tou Scene, Stavanger, Norway, 8/21/04. Hand assembled and numbered. Edition of 150 cdr. PAAL NILSSEN-LOVE "Twenty Seven Years Later" [024] $11 Solo drums and percussion. This release completes our four part survey of recordings from Paal-Nilssen-Love. Recorded at Molde International Jazz Festival, Forum, Molde, Norway, 7/20/02. This performance finds Paal playing in the same building his father (also a drummer, now a painter) had played 27 years earlier. These unique pieces of music tell of Paal's dedication to and masterey of his craft. Hand assembled and numbered. Edition of 150 cdr. Quote

gnhrtg Posted November 20, 2005 Report Posted November 20, 2005 Exploding Customer's first album on Ayler, Live at Glenn Miller Cafe, is recommended (and it comes from Kjell Nordeson's first gig after he joined the band). Though I have not yet heard it, I'm sure this new release is at least as good since Martin Kuchen (the sax player and composer of all almost all of the band's material) told me that they were very happy with the music on this new release (this was before his gig with Looper, joined by John Tilbury, in Stockholm). Alexander Hawkins Posted November 20, 2005 Report Posted November 20, 2005 Bagatellen: Accelerated Ghost Trance ← Thanks! A nice piece. I really identify with the bit about Braxton taking an alto solo. I was at the gig Leo just released as 'Quintet (London) 2004' and had exactly the same experience. The music was phenomenal all evening, but every now and then, there would be a truly visionary blast of the Braxton of 'For Alto' etc... Quote

Did you count the discs with Nilssen-Love as sideman? - you might easily get to 30 or so. His Personal Hygiene (Utech) with Lasse Marhaug is excellent, while the other one, with organ, seemed rather dull on first listen. I will also probably get the new Exploding Customer disc - I did not find the first dis to be particularly revelatory, but the potential was there. Gret price also. Edited November 20, 2005 by Д.Д.
