I'm not familiar with Avenel nor Humair so I can't comment on their shining or not but they do lend terrific support, I feel.

Avenel is normally a much more flexible and inventive bassist than this format allows him to be. He worked with Steve Lacy for 20 years, and can be heard on many of his records. The one I'd recommend in particular:

"Bye-Ya" - Steve Lacy Trio (Freelance)

"Monk's Dream" (Verve) trio plus Roswell Rudd plus ( :wacko: ) Irene Aebi (on a couple of trakcs only).

If you ordered Mal Waldron's disc, you'll be able to enjoy Avenel's playing to a full extent.

Humair can play anything (equally well), but again, I feel he is most interesting in a more adventurous setting (like his band with Mark Ducret, Bruno Chevillon and some Ellery Eskelin: "Liberte Surveille" (2CD) - also on SKETCH).

Avenel with Lacy! YES! GADS! I know I've gotten old but I just couldn't place the name 'Avenel' with anyone.

~~~~~~~~~~
Has anyone taken the plunge and bought any Utech yet? If not, would someone please take the plunge, buy Utech and give me an opinion?
And if you could do it by the end of the week...
I did, I did!
Need to do more listenng, but the intial impression is that other than Lasse Marhaug (which I thought was very interesting), the releases are not essential.
Ras Moshe is a fairly typical '60s "free jazz", and Gjerstad/percussionist duo sounded quite monotonous. More listening required.
Chaney, I'm a sucker for your funny home stories ;)
David, I don't think I'll need that Schlippenbach thing... thanks though for your concert write up, sounds like *some* fun.
I never was a fan of Mahall. I know him from two projects of Aki Takase's - he was outright boring with her W.C. Handy tribute project, but a recent broadcast I heard of her Fats Waller programme was fun (meaning: he didn't disturb and Eugene Chadbourne and the others had a whole lot of fun).
Spinning some Jimmy Smith (will do a little tribute on radio on Sunday evening - I'll post a link in the respective part of the board). David, you'll definitely need something other than "Root Down" - almost any Blue Note I've heard is fine, favourites include "Back at the Chicken Shack" (with Kenny Burrell & Stanley Turrentine - not RVGed yet), "Groovin' at Smalls" (2CD live recording of his working trio - GREAT stuff!), "The Sermon" and "House Party" (culled from the same sessions, feat. Lee Morgan, George Coleman, Lou Donaldson, Tina Brooks, Kenny Burrell, Art Blakey a.o.), "Cool Blues" (live recording with Brooks, Donaldson, Blakey et.al.), "Crazy Baby" (a terrific trio disc - not RVGed yet, either, or was it?), and some early Verves, such as "Bashin'" (first big band-backed sides, arr. by Oliver Nelson, half of it with trio), and "Organ Grinder Swing" (trio).
That's just the beginning... I suggest you go for any one trio and any one group recording of the ones I list and look if you like it, then get more... my proposition: "The Sermon" and "Groovin'" or "Crazy Baby".
Chaney: let us know about the Sketches! I really hope you'll enjoy the HUM (now there's some great Humair! And Urtreger is a wonderful musician, too) and Domancich! You did order Lacy's "Work", too, didn't you? Humair's at his best there as well.
Flurin, I will check out more Jimmy Smith eventually. This won't be on the top of my priorities, but I will do it. I did hear more than "Root Down" (Jimmy Smith used to be quite a favorite of the Russian "jazz" radio... back in the days when there was one), so I would say I got an adequate exposure to his music - and avoiding his records comes not from negligence or ignorance, but is a conscious decision.
--------------------------------
Just to reiterate: everybody here whould get Lacy-Cox-Humair "Work" (Sketch) RIGHT NOW before it disappears - a perfect jazz recording.
---------------------------------
All this discussion with Chaney during simultaneous listening to Farao's CD led me to an idea that we should all do it - choose a record (something not as obvoiusly and unquestionably good as as "Work" or Death's "Individual Thought Pattern", but something fairly unknown and unexplored for all of us, that would require a certain effort) and listen and discuss it at the same time (a chat would be probably more appropriate for these purposes, though) - could be interesting.
Primarily due to Chaney's recent posts I placed an order for three Sketch discs to day. Work, Hum, and Liberté Surveillée
Right now I am listening to disc one of this set:
e696085isp9.jpg
Evan Parker - 50th Birthday Concert on Leo
Fantastic music! This set is Parker with Schlippenbach and Lovens. I'm really looking forward to hearing the second disc with Guy and Lytton.
Sounds like fun, David.
And yes: I have Work.
ON THE EDIT: A question might be: Do we do what David suggests in the Funny Rat thread or create a new thread?
Good son that I am, I'm off to visit me mum. -_-
New release on Kevin Norton's Barking Hoop:
Time-Space Modulator
Barking Hoop BKH008
With Kevin Norton (drums, vibraphone, percussion), Dave Ballou (trumpet, cornet), John Lindberg (bass) and Tony Malaby (tenor, soprano saxophones). Recorded live at Tonic (New York City) in April 2004, and 'in the basement' in August 2003.
Seems Schlippenbach had an accident either last Saturday or Sunday. The concert in Zurich (I couldn't go, had to finally catch Jacques Rivette's "La belle noiseuse" in a theater that day) took place without him. I don't know what happened to him, the concert review only stated he was in hospital due to some accident.
Then, the reviewer liked the concert, also he liked Mahall (and he - the reviewer - is a saxophonist himself... :wacko: ).
ubu: This from JC poster Tom K:
Last Saturday Alex von Schlippenbach did his "Monk's Casino" programme in Bern (Switzerland). A most memorable event, not only for the music, which in itself was fantastic. The idea of playing the complete Monk compositions (about 70) in one session is quite a challenge, and it was done very cleverly, interlinking the themes and making whole new compositions out of them, with still a lot of great improvisation by the band members: Schlippenbach (piano), Axel Dörner (tp), Rudi Mahall (bcl), Joachim Dette (or was it Jan Roder?) (b) and Uli Jennessen (d). The whole event lasts 3+ hours!
But then, after about one hour, a serious incident happened: While walking around the piano, Schlippenbach stepped over the edge of the dimly lit stage, fell down and hurt his leg very badly. He obviously couldn't go on playing and was taken to hospital, where he is apparently lying now. I don't know what the diagnosis is, but let's wish him all the best for a quick recovery.
BTW, the remaining four musicians continued and finished the programme on their own, and it was still fantastic music with great entertainment value.
Tony, I would have have loved to do it in a separate thread, however I suspect that we'd be listening to something funnyratty, which we should all have in our collections. I dare to assume that funnyratty content of the collections of other board members is somewhat limited. Thus, unless we subsidize other board members (including surchare for emotional damage) - or unless we use our exceptional powers of persuasion to convince them to buy "this :rfr music ", I doubt they will be able to participate. And if it's no use for them, why take it outside of The Rat? This will be viewed as some over-indulgent freak expancion.
If we keep it in The Rat, though, it will be viewed as a trend for insular self-proclaimed elitism ;) .
Please, if I'm heard laughing from inside my office this early in the morning, I'll lose my reputatioin for being "Mr. Grumpy." :D
I agree with keeping it right here. ALL, as usual, would be very welcome to join in and add their comments.
By the way, thanks for copying me on that e-mail. Very interesting. Would really like to get a few of those Sketch titles -- the ones available from neither Indie Jazz nor Cadence -- without going the expensive order-from-Europe route. The search will continue.
Friends, I started listening to Giovanni Mirabassi "Avanti!" (Sketch) - a solo piano disc - and coudl barely keep myself listenig for about as long as 1/3 of it - then just had to turn it off. This is a cheesy, overly-lyrical reworking of various popular/traditional songs. Dangerously close to muzak, and I can hardly imagine any of the frequent Funny Rat posters enjoying it.
Thank you for the warning! I will not place an order for this disc in that case.
I'm listening to Dal Vivo! (Sketch) with Mirabassi (piano), Daniele Mencarelli (bass) and Louis Moutin (drums).
It's little wonder (I'm guessing) that Avanti sold so well; overly-lyrical indeed! Sounds like it should be playing over the closing credits of some sensitive Italian (?) film. Y'know, young love and all that crap. It's not too horrid once the band starts to cook but even then, the sound is more jubilant than heated.
Sorry. Maybe if I were more filled with joie de vivre I could stand to listen to such musical pap. (Much better off listening to some Poulenc.)
Hmmm... Dal Vivo! Off to Systran for a translation...
(tick tock tick tock)
It's as I'd feared: from the alive one!
Catch me... I'm swooning.
On the other hand, clarinetist Gabriele Mirabasi is a whole different story - no cheese there. What I will do as soon as Lacy's "Work" stops playing (listening to it for the third time in three days), is put Kenny Wheeler / John Taylor / Gabriele Mirabassi "Moon" (Egea) - I remember this one was good!
I might spin the Lacy next, IF I can resist the urge to first light some scented candles, draw a nice bubble bath, start a new Harlequin Romance and, hitting repeat all on my CD player, luxuriate in the sensuous sounds of From the Alive One!
Do these pants make me look fat?
B-)
On second thought, maybe a cup of coffee would be a better idea as I feel as though I'm slipping into a coma.
I EDITED and posted what follows just as you made your post above. Watch your mail, Jon!
AND I SPENT $13 ORDERING AVANTI! AND THE DISK IS, AT THIS VERY MOMENT, ON ITS WAY!
Dear lord...
No lie: I have NOT hit repeat on my CD player and I swear to gOd, From the Alive One! has been playing for several hours! IT... WILL... NEVER... END!
Maybe I can stitch this one back up into its cellophane and give it to someone as a gift.
I suggest you make a new CD sleeve yourself - something out of white cardboard, with crookedly attached abstract picture (which would avoke an association with sine waves or something equally tasty). This way Jon will think this is some sort of eaiefieiia :rfr music, and will put it on.
And, as you noticed yourself, once it is on, it never stops.
While I don't have any official Gabriele Mirabassi releases (yet), he is indeed a guy to watch! I've heard some of his duo (with accordion) and trio music, as well as him playing in others bands (Rabih Abou-Khalil, among others).
Glad to know there's no need to get those Giovanni Mirabassi Sketches... please no one send me one! :g
