Tom 1960 Posted April 25, 2009 Report Posted April 25, 2009 Any thoughts on this one? Nice lineup with Roy Hargrove, Cyrus Chestnut, Joshua Redman, Steve Turre and Lewis Nash. Quote
Dan Gould Posted April 25, 2009 Report Posted April 25, 2009 Highly recommended. I brought this one up in a thread about "Young Lion" records that stand out from the over-hyped crowd. Quote
WorldB3 Posted April 25, 2009 Report Posted April 25, 2009 (edited) Its a good one, I think you will really like it. He has a new one coming out next month called Kind Of Brown. It's a return to him leading a straight ahead Jazz band, I have the advance and it sounds good so far, I have only given it one listen. If you looking for something new with him on that is a slam dunk it I highly recommend the record Watts by Jeff "Tain" Watts, Terence Blanchard, Branford Marsalis, and Christian McBride. The swing/grooves on it is ridiculous. More than lives up the hype. Edited April 25, 2009 by WorldB3 Quote
John Tapscott Posted April 25, 2009 Report Posted April 25, 2009 I have it, but it's been a long time since I listened to it. Will have to give it a listen. I recall that it is very good, though. Quote
mikeweil Posted April 25, 2009 Report Posted April 25, 2009 All of his Verve CDs are fine ... I love those bass tracks with Ray Bown and Milt Hinton Quote
king ubu Posted April 28, 2009 Report Posted April 28, 2009 All of his Verve CDs are fine ... I love those bass tracks with Ray Bown and Milt Hinton Splanky! Or what's that one - great! I have this, "Fingerpainting" and "Number Two Express" from his early Verves. "Sci-Fi", too, I think. Pretty good albums, all. Quote
Tom 1960 Posted April 28, 2009 Author Report Posted April 28, 2009 Thanks for the input fellas. While my buying these days is heavily weighted towards the guys long passed, I'm pushing myself to get more hip among the modern(living) players. Sounds like I can't go wrong with the McBride release. As for Jeff "Tain" Watts mentioned by WorldB3, I read a recent review in Downbeat praising this release. I guess I'll have to look that up also. sidewinder Posted April 29, 2009 Report Posted April 29, 2009 I caught a club performance by McBride's group shortly after this CD was issued. I recall one fabulous Wayne Shorter ballad that was the highlight of the set. I've got the CD somewhere, will have to dig it out. Quote
funkogre Posted May 2, 2009 Report Posted May 2, 2009 (edited) I like that album. The solo version of Night Train he does is great. I'm glad Christian signed with Mack Avenue and is working on some new projects now. Check out his new duets album he's working on for Mack Avenue here. He's doing one track and interview per month. Three of them are posted so far. Edited June 9, 2009 by funkogre Quote
mikeweil Posted May 2, 2009 Report Posted May 2, 2009 He's really innovative, as far as marketuing and producing/presenting his music is concerned. That's a great idea with these duets - he might get even me to buy downloads! That said - I think he's got a gorgeous sound on the bass! Quote
