By MATT RICHTEL Published: July 7, 2009 The actress known as Savanna Samson once relished preparing for a role. “I couldn’t wait to get my next script,” she said. Van Basten II Posted July 9, 2009 Author Report Posted July 9, 2009 Let me get this straight. People watched porn for the plots? If you knew what the word that pronounces like plot means in French/Quebec slang, you'd chuckle and say yes. Quote
Dan Gould Posted July 9, 2009 Report Posted July 9, 2009 The fact is that not only did there used to be plots, but more than a couple of the performers in the eighties came to porn because they couldn't catch a break in Hollywood, and actually had training and some acting chops. These were mostly male performers, iirc. Generally the career path of starlets goes nude model/exotic dancer --> video performer. Quote

These were mostly male performers, iirc. Generally the career path of starlets goes nude model/exotic dancer --> video performer. Ashlyn Gere was one of the few female porn stars who not only has some acting chops, but worked in mainstream film and TV at the same time she was doing porn. She had roles on "The X-Files" and "Millennium," as well as a recurring role on "Space: Above and Beyond." Although she's not as well remembered as some, 80s and 90s porn star Madison Stone had a mainstream film career in B-grade horror flicks (like "Evil Toons", which co-starred Arte Johnson, David Carradine, and fellow porn star Barbara Dare). Madison is now a fairly well-known tattoo artist. Then there's the infamous Traci Lords who turned out to have been underage while making all but one of her 100+ porn films and tried to spin her notoriety into a mainstream acting career. The last film I saw her in was, appropriately enough, "Zack and Miri make a Porno." She was pretty good, too. Also appearing in "Zack and Miri" was another real life porn star, Katie Morgan, although I don't think this was a "career move" so much as a "star turn." She didn't exactly have a mainstream film career per se, but Asia Carerra (now retired) did appear in "The Big Lebowski" as well as doing quite a bit of body double work in Hollywood (she doubled for Jennifer Tilly in Tilly's nude scenes). Nowadays there's Sasha Grey, a hardcore porn star who recently did a Steven Soderberg film ("The Girlfriend Experience," for those who care)... And yes...I know FAR too much about this...I'ma go lie down now... Edited July 9, 2009 by Alexander Quote

clifford_thornton Posted July 9, 2009 Report Posted July 9, 2009 Sasha Grey. Indeed. She's got a noise-music LP coming out, I think, also. Quote
Alexander Posted July 9, 2009 Report Posted July 9, 2009 Sasha Grey. Indeed. She's got a noise-music LP coming out, I think, also. She's not really my physical type, but she's certainly very cute and (from what I've read) also VERY bright... Not that being in porn precludes intelligence. Asia Carrera is in Mensa... Quote
Van Basten II Posted July 9, 2009 Author Report Posted July 9, 2009 (edited) Sacha Grey's interviews when promoting The Girlfriend experience showed her interest in different things. On the other side of the ocean the controversial movie Baise-moi starred a few french X-stars as Rafaella Anderson and Karen Lancaume. clifford_thornton Posted July 9, 2009 Report Posted July 9, 2009 Sacha Grey's interviews when promoting The Girlfriend experience showed her interest in different things. I was planning on seeing that but got busy and skipped out on movies in June. Now it's gone from Austin theaters. Quote
Dan Gould Posted July 9, 2009 Report Posted July 9, 2009 I never saw the Jennifer Tilly flick but I can't believe Asia Carrera was believable as a body double, even after her bad boob job. And yes, I know too much about this stuff too. Quote
Van Basten II Posted July 9, 2009 Author Report Posted July 9, 2009 (edited) Can't beleive i never noticed Asia in the Big Lebowski, what did she do ? Hmmm the way i called her by a first name shows an intimacy that should not be made public :blush2: Edited July 9, 2009 by Van Basten II Quote

clifford_thornton Posted July 9, 2009 Report Posted July 9, 2009 I googled Sasha Grey to get a clearer picture of what the deal was. I'd only heard of her/seen photos. I have to say, watching 9 minutes of hardcore Sasha (over lunch and at home) was actually physically nauseating. And I consider myself both a sexual "liberal" and one who is supportive of personal rights, both in the viewing and making of pornography. So, I'm glad for her that she's able to do well financially and creatively with it, and yea she is very cute & looks like a normal girl. But that type of thing is too relentless/intense even for me. Well she doesn't exactly specialize in soft-focus sensual erotica. And unfortunately, the industry has changed so that acts that might physically nauseate a sexual "liberal" are more and more mainstream. I never saw the Jennifer Tilly flick but I can't believe Asia Carrera was believable as a body double, even after her bad boob job. And yes, I know too much about this stuff too. I believe she was Tilly's "stunt butt." again, totally unbelievable body double. Tilly has a butt in proportion to her ample chest. Asia not so much. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted July 10, 2009 Report Posted July 10, 2009 I'm sure you are right about that re: the industry. Not being a connoisseur of pornography, only a casual and occasional observer, I expected it to be serious business - I mean, I know what "hardcore porn" is. But this took it to another level for me. The gagging/barfing noises didn't help. Quote

The gagging/barfing noises didn't help. Yeah, Sasha's stuff is very hard core. Not my cup of tea at all. Apparently, she got noticed in her very first scene ever by loudly demanding that the male co-star punch her in the stomach (he didn't do it). However, I respect the fact that SHE is the one who has made the choice to do this stuff. She started out at 18 with a written mission statement and a clear goal to make it to the top of her industry, which she has done all by herself. She's not controlled by a Svengali. She's not doing it because she's hooked on drugs. She does it because she wants to, which makes her an interesting kind of Feminist (the kind many other Feminists don't want to have around). She has made her body a commodity, but SHE'S doing the selling. The Rolling Stone piece a couple of months back on her was very interesting. She's a fascinating young woman. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted July 10, 2009 Report Posted July 10, 2009 Yeah, I did some research including reading & listening to some interviews. Certainly in control of her business - no doubt that she's doing what she wants, how she wants. I'm sure there's more hardcore stuff out there, but I can't imagine what it is. Quote

Dan Gould Posted July 10, 2009 Report Posted July 10, 2009 Personally I have a hard time believing that she got into these fetishes without a little help via child abuse, which ties into her cold and dead eyes on display in a well publicized appearance on Tyran Banks's show. I have no idea if she qualifies as intellectual or if she's just learned enough to name-drop and fake her way through it - but doing what she does (and the words out of her mouth while she does it) and then making some claim about "feminism" isn't just laughable, its sad. Jim Alfredson Posted July 10, 2009 Report Posted July 10, 2009 Let's stay on topic regarding the article posted. I'm a little wary of having a thread about porn here. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted July 10, 2009 Report Posted July 10, 2009 Understood. I do want to chime in and say that abuse does not have to be a precursor to working in the sex industry. And that, according to Ms. Grey, the Tyra interview was pretty well-staged by the producers, so that very little of what she actually had to say was aired. So I take the woman for her word - call me a sucka. Quote
