Teasing the Korean Posted September 21, 2009 Report Posted September 21, 2009 Teicher checked out in 2008, now Ferrante: latimes.com/news/obituaries/la-me-arthur-ferrante21-2009sep21,0,5788034.story While they certainly came to epitomize schlock, their early prepared piano recordings are both entertaining and adventurous. Their "Heavenly Sounds" album on ABC is like a proto-ambient record. Quote

AllenLowe Posted September 21, 2009 Report Posted September 21, 2009 but they were born free.................. Quote
Teasing the Korean Posted September 21, 2009 Author Report Posted September 21, 2009 Their photos were almost never on the records from the period I reference - Columbia, Westminster and ABC Paramount. The one album with their photo - Blast Off on ABC - They are wearing bubble helmets, and one of them has a crew cut. The shiny hair came later. The early stuff is brilliant. Quote
Teasing the Korean Posted September 22, 2009 Author Report Posted September 22, 2009 Here is a video of "African Echoes," one of their prepared piano pieces. I did not realize they were still doing this stuff this late in their career: Quote
DMP Posted September 28, 2009 Report Posted September 28, 2009 And how about their version of "Cristo Rendentor?" Quote

Teasing the Korean Posted September 28, 2009 Author Report Posted September 28, 2009 From the Times: "...their early records, from the 1950’s, explored the outer limits of sonic special effects. Preparing their pianos with rubber mutes, sandpaper, strips of metal, cotton balls and cardboard, and occasionally pounding or plucking the strings, Mr. Ferrante and Mr. Teicher elicited all sorts of odd sound effects in the albums “Hi-Fireworks” (1953), “Soundproof” (1956) and “Blast Off” (1959)." This is their great period, IMHO. Quote
Teasing the Korean Posted September 28, 2009 Author Report Posted September 28, 2009 any of it available? This twofer is representative of this period, but the mastering is apparently questionable: http://www.amazon.com/Soundproof-Soundblas...9808&sr=1-1 Quote
Ted O'Reilly Posted September 28, 2009 Report Posted September 28, 2009 Here is a video of "African Echoes," one of their prepared piano pieces. I did not realize they were still doing this stuff this late in their career: Yeah, but "African Echoe"? Had they already met Dan Quayle? Quote
