I'm curious about it, but a little wary. Looks like another attempt to re-invent a familiar character- lots of action/T&A/CGI in place of an actual story. Hope I'm wrong!

That said I'll probably go see it anyway. :tophat:

After seeing the trailer, that's exactly what I was thinking.

I'm a fan of the classic Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce pairing.

Unless the reviews are pretty bad, I'll probably end up going to see it. From the previews I'm a bit wary that this will be more flash than substance but I hope I'm wrong.

Count me firmly in the Rathbone, Nigel Bruce camp, especially with regard to their first two films together, The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes and The Hound of the Baskervilles. IMO, when they stopped making the series in 1946, they might has well have padlocked 221 B Baker Street for purposes of making movies. This new one with Downey looks like all style and no substance. Typical Hollywood. No one is any better at taking a good story and mucking it up.

Up over and out.

I like Holmes played by Vasily Borisovich Livanov

Boy, whoever was doing the subtitles on this one did a pretty godawful translation.

As for the new movie, I wonder how many explosions it will have?

The previews, at least, give no sense of the contemplative pace of the stories.

I have no problem with them reinventing the concept/character and having it be more fun and action-y - a "contemplative" Holmes feature would die in today's marketplace - but it doesn't look like the "right" reinvention to me. I don't mind Downey in the role, but I've yet to watch a Guy Ritchie film that I've liked.

I saw the trailer on the big screen the other night when we went to see The Men Who Stare At Goats. The trailer made the new Holmes flick look very tongue-in-cheek and campy. Unintentionally hilarious too, but not worth paying to see, for me.

BTW, the movie, ...Goats, was pointless and lame. Oh well.

I think it looks awful. Plus I hate the director.

Yeah, Guy Ritchie sure seems like a terrible director, doesn't he? One of those who's all 'tude and no talent.

I'll not being seeing the new Holmes movie, but it's not because of Guy Ritchie. I love both Snatch (one of Brad Pitt's off plumb roles that really works) and Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. There are more interesting characters in those movies than you can count. Both films, IMO, are right up there with The Big Lebowski.

Speaking of The Dude, Jeff Bridges is going to be in the Coen Brothers 2011 repurposing of True Grit. That one sounds like fun.

So why won't you be seeing it?

Just curious.

Well for one thing, and as closed minded as this may seem, for me, there will never be anyone who can measure up to Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce when it comes to playing Holmes and Watson. Second, there are very few movies I enjoy that are laden with CGI's, even the simple stuff. Ironically, one of those is Iron Man starring the unindicted co-conspirator himself, Robert Downey, Jr. Lastly, there are a lot of other movies I'd rather see.

Up over and out.
