peterintoronto Posted January 19, 2010 Report Posted January 19, 2010 Wow, wow, WOW! Last Thursday, I ordered the two-DVD documentary on Sunny Murray. Directed by Antoine Prum, it is available here. It arrived today, Monday. Luxembourg to Canada in four days is unreal, and must have been powered by the raw energy of this film. I just watched the first disc, and am in shock. It is fantastic. It really illuminates a music that will forever live in the shadows. The supporting cast is top-notch: Khan Jamal, Bobby Few, Valerie Wilmer, Cecil Taylor, Sonny Simmons, etc. I will likely save the second disc for tomorrow, lest I die from sheer joy and sensory overload. The packaging is divine, and the directing and production top notch. I haven't seen the Albert Ayler or soon to be released Sonny Simmons documentaries, but Antoine Prum has set the bar very high. I cannot recommend this film more. Quote
king ubu Posted January 19, 2010 Report Posted January 19, 2010 some discussion about how the film came to be here: Quote
Tom Storer Posted January 19, 2010 Report Posted January 19, 2010 (edited) That does look interesting! On February 23rd, Sunny Murray will be playing at a club called Le Dynamo in Pantin, just outside Paris, as part of the Banlieues Bleues festival. He'll be in a trio with Charles Gayle and bassist Juini Booth. The concert is dedicated to the memory of Sirone. Edited January 20, 2010 by Tom Storer Quote
king ubu Posted January 19, 2010 Report Posted January 19, 2010 I'd sure be there if I was in Paris, Tom! Quote

clifford_thornton Posted January 19, 2010 Report Posted January 19, 2010 I'd like to see the documentary, even if I find Sunny's playing of recent years a little less engaging. But then again, when you've gone as far as you can with one thing... Quote
jlhoots Posted February 6, 2010 Report Posted February 6, 2010 I purchased this, but it won't play in my US DVD player. Suggestions?? I've e-mailed the distributor to see if they'll take it back. Cost to me was $43 including shipping from Europe. I'd sell it to someone here in the US for $35 (personal check) shipped first class. Assumes you have a DVD player that can play PAL format. Open but obviously unplayed. Quote
jlhoots Posted February 6, 2010 Report Posted February 6, 2010 Please see my addendum in "offering & looking for". Thanks!! Quote
