Can someone remind me what the deal was with this?

There was a problem with the Moncur Mosaic. I think disc 3 had the whole Hipnosis session, but the rest of the disc was not what was supposed to be on it. I believe they repressed the third disc and people could trade it in.

So what happened to all the bad disc 3s? Does Mosaic still have a bunch? Does anyone have a spare lying around?

I ask because I doubt Hipnosis will ever come out on its own. The fact that Larry Young's Heaven On Earth is coming out as a TOCJ does give me some hope.

I don't remember that one at all, will be interested to hear, since I own that box and hope I didn't miss something! I remember that they had to repress one of the Sam Rivers Mosaic discs due to a mastering error.

I don't remember exactly what was wrong with the third Moncur disc, but Mosaic did indeed replace it.

By the way, what do you mean by "TOCJ"? All of Toshiba's EMI jazz CDs have that prefix. If you are referring to the Toshiba "Blue Note Works" series from the 1990s (TOCJ-15xx, TOCJ-16xx and TOCJ-4xxx), those are no longer made.

This post seems to indicate the problem was with disc #1 (not disc #3), and that was my memory of it too.

I see still used copies of disc #1 in secondhand shops all the time. There was one on Ebay last week that went unpurchased too.

The "Select" set did not include the whole "Hipnosis" session, but it's easy to grab on eBay on an LP - it's one of those BN twofers from the 70s. My copy, from eBay, is pretty close to mint, and it sounds great. For some reason, 70s LPs on eBay are usually in very good shape, compared with 50s and 60s LPs, which are normally very noisy. It's not just the age of the LPs.

The Jackie McLean LP-set Hipnosis had two sessions, one recorded on June 14, 1962 and issued on the Japanese CD Jackie McLean Quintet (TOCJ-4116) in 1996 and on the Connoisseur CD Vertigo in 2000, and one recorded on February 3, 1967 and reissued in its entirety on the Grachan Moncur III Select.
